This week fell at a bad time for me, as I was going away from the Thursday, plus two members of our already reduced team of nine ended up not taking part, while a third was not feeling it... I somehow doubt our team will take part again (at least not together in the same format). One invisible person added herself to our team early on then never replied to any emails (which is the only contact route GISH gave) so we have no idea who she was!

However, looking back at what I did, it wasn't too bad. I had said this year I was only going to do challenges I really fancied, and that I was going to try and make them as good as I possibily could. I don't think I quite managed that, but it was a moderate amount of fun! And my active team mates did some fricking awesome stuff, so there is that.

Anyhow, here is a glimpse of my (part) week.

#121 SIDE-BY-SIDE. You know those garden gnomes that dotted your grandmother’s backyard? Well, it’s been a while and now they have fallen on hard times. They have turned to a life of crime and misanthropy. Their little gnome hearts are filled with despair, hatred, and regret. Show us the before and after.

When gnomes go bad...things get very dark, very quick.

I just got round to sorting out the Schmelke jpegs for my Creation UK photo ops from May! It's not as dilatory as it sounds - well, yeah, it is actually. I had the email to request the jpegs keyed up for ages then forgot about it, so I only sent it off in July. Anyhow, Chris sent them and included his crops and the originals - so I'm posting my own crops and edits now, because Chris wanted to show off his imperial purple background, but I wanted to be able to see what was going on! LOL

Mind you, I still can't work out what Jared was doing with his legs in this Velma dip one, and I still HATE my face - but look at his pretty little kissyness!Read more... )

This week I went on a three morning workshop in Colchester to learn the basics of watercolours. There were only four of us, and it was interesting to see how different everyone's styles were, and the different levels ot experience and abilities. Anyhow, I had fun and I think this one was more useful than the other one day  workshop I did a while back, as this tutor spent more time on how to use different brushes, plus I liked her approach working with a single colour to really show how much variety you can get in adding more or less water. Simple stuff but that was exactly what I needed.

Herewith a picspam of my three mornings.

Car bonnet number 1 - I'm not supposed to share too much of the design but I can show you lot more, so if you're interested, I'll keep posting as I go.

Today I went to an expressive portraits, speed painting in acrylics workshop - it was a lot of fun and TOTALLy outside of my comfort zone... but then so was the watercolour essentials workshop on Saturday. So what, you may well ask, IS my comfort zone? Heh heh. I'll tell you my comfort zone, folks. It's snuggled on my sofa, asleep.

Back to today though...

I had a vague idea that I might be able to do something for one of the upcoming challenges, and my lovely friend Lois, who runs the workshop, messaged me to ask if I had any references I wanted her to print for me, so I pinged her off four photos of - you guessed it - Jensen and Jared.

For my first painting, I tried Jared. We had to pick a piece of mounting board to paint on, and like my other workshop with Lois, the idea was to have a mid tone background colour you could then use, and the painting would start with a pale yellow to pick out all the highlights. Then the other colours could be added and the darks last. There's no drawing, except with the paint brush.

This was the result, with the reference pic.Read more... )

It's been a while.

Sketchbooking is continuing to be interesting. I also did a one day workshop with the same tutor on mixed media.

Tonight we did minimising the palette and had a choice between full monochrome and a limited palette. I'd meant to have a go at both but ran out of time.
So here's my monochrome, sepia portrait from a stock photoRead more... )

Many moons ago the little writing community on here called 12mowrimo decided to have a go at some original fiction. We produced this anthology of short stories, called Dust. I've got a story in there, and there are some other authors I'm sure you'll recognise.

I missed the launch due to personal circumstances and then forgot all about it. But if you are like sci-fi and fantasy you'll enjoy reading these. As the blurb says: An anthology of science fiction and fantasy—of fairies and angels and ill sisters and sentient dust, worlds of water-breathers and sky people, of prisoners and genetically altered outliers, and a colony on the moon. These tales explore themes of love and hate, loss and recovery, life and death, and good and evil. Seven authors, seven unique takes on the human condition.

Click HERE to go to Smashwords and download the e-book!

I'll put my own story here for convenience.

Word count: ~7000
Warnings: Contains both Het and M/M relationships but no actual sex happens.
Summary: A fairy story or a love story, call it what you will. This is the tale of two siblings and a stranger who found that love at first sight isn't all it's cracked up to be.

One in a Million Motes of Dust
Today we know space dust can be created in several ways, but that most of it came from supernovae. It’s the way of the universe. Cosmic creation, death and rebirth came from the heart of a star, and life shows us daily how love can work in exactly the same way.

I'll start with the random. I feel that bickering Cathedrals on Twitter is somehow a very British thing. Check out all the comments and see what you think!

On to Inktober and Day 9's prompt was Screech. Me and Milly had the same thought on this one - OWLS!

By Jove, I think he's done. Finally! Now I have to varnish him. This bear is being sponsored by a company called Biomass and they've given me some special varnish that is supposed to keep my bear free from bacteria - apparently they are going to go round the trail swabbing bears to show how their product keeps mine so much cleaner! Yesterday I had a day off painting to flit off to London to the Heroes and Villains convention (more a mini comic con event than a JIB) where I got a photo op with the lovely John Barrowman, and Katie Cassidy. The poor girl left SPN behind her years ago, but got two SPN hobbits plastered to her slim sides when 99.9% of the other fans were there for Arrow. Never mind!

Here's the glorious Barrowman, flashing his knees for us.Read more... )

This lion is killing me! LOL. I did some painting yesterday but today decided I really need to get him up in the air a bit so I can paint the underneath bits and the insides of his legs without having to lie on the floor. So that meant searching around for something to prop him up on - not easy when his legs are so spaced out, and his feet so massive! Anyhow, we had some work done yonks ago which meant some original Victorian quarry tiles were taken up, and we saved them because they might come in useful one day. Today was that day! I brushed off as many as I could find that didn't have too much gunk adhering to their bases, and voila. Clarence is now about 8-9 inches higher off the floor than before.

The sketchbooking class has been interesting - I can't say I'm enjoying everything we're doing but it is certainly great for pushing me outside my comfort zone! The last few of weeks he's been getting us to look at uses of colour to imply distance, suggest relationships between objects and create interest. The three pictures below are the results of my efforts.
First was an attempt to show distance through shades of colour. I'm not sure that what I did followed his instructions, because he was talking about using bluer shades for the more distant objects, and I didn't do that. The painting is pretty naff, but I did enjoy messing about with these colours.Lots of images (incl some NSFW) under the cut )

I thought I'd put my other vidded tasks in this post.

Task: Time-lapse this submission to 30 seconds or less. Paint a Bob Ross painting. We must see both the painter replicating
the Bob Ross painting and the playback of the Bob Ross video the painter is replicating. You must paint in real-time
while he is painting. The video should end with a side-by-side comparison of your masterpiece and Bob Ross’s.

I had thought I didn't need one of these because it was easy to search on the Fanart tag, wasn't it? Except it isn't. I've done too much art, and I've forgotten to tag some posts and well, I just searched for something without success, so if I can't find it, then nobody else will stand a chance! So here's the beginnings of my attempt to sort it into some semblance of order.

I know this is just digital playing around not proper art and all that - but dammit, I think I might get myself one. Lumpy bumpy bits be damned. If anyone is tempted there's 20% off everything on Redbubble today - use the code: CARPE20
Click on the pic to go to Redbubble - there's tons of lovely stuff on there - t shirts, graphic tops, chiffon tops, phone covers etc, all with art much better than I can do, so I don't expect anyone to buy mine!
