I've been blessed again with patient and talented authors! This prompt is one I've been mulling over for years and though the art didn't turn out how I wanted, raths_kitten has given me a perfect and utterly charming story which totally lives up to my inarticulate desires!

Summer is drawing to a close and here's another little batch of awesome to see us through the dying days.

Exclesiates
Jess returns from the dead and Sam is getting married. All is well with the world - or is it?
A gentle ominous thread runs through this one, and kept me guessing. The story is a lovely Sam POV, and definitely delivers on the brotherly bond.

The Holy Grail Bird
Sam is at the heart of this gentle yet gripping and heart wrenching tale. I cried over a clockword bird and the ending broke me in a good way. A fantastical story that remains true to the characters and a truly magical resolution to Chuck's god bullet. This one is now top of my list of faves this year and I'm certain it will stay there.

The Master's House
Another Sam POV but this Sam is an angel, and the story takes use with Sam through aspects of creation and the burgeoning of individuality and free will in a way that is recognisably SPN and yet also wonderfully different. I especially loved the descriptions of Dean (there's a surprise) as having been a weapon in the heart of Darkness, and how that hurt him, how the story uses memories of war and how time develops over time (as it were). It's beautifully written, thought provoking, and clever.  I love how, though this is such a different setting, our Sam and Dean shine through.

A post modern manifesto of joylessness
I need to add this one in because it's so tricksy and cool. Firmly in Sam's POV, the story takes us on a gradual realisation that we (and Sam) really don't know what's real and what isn't. The sense of calm confusion is actually more scary than anything more overt - the repetition is disturbing. It's sad and full of undercurrents of horror in a very subtle way.

My second art post of the day! Huzzah! So this is for the TFWbang, and [personal profile] hit_the_books' charming, fun story All Bark and No Bite in which Sam acquires a dog. Then another dog, and another...you get the picture. All of which makes a nice contrast to the dark!Fic art, don't you think?
Story link here NOW! Go read it and give yourself a smile or two.

Promptember Day 2

Prompt: Season
Title: Fall
Words: 100
Warnings: memories of Hell
Characters: Dean Winchester, Alastair

Fall

There is a purity about salt; the way it glitters even in the dimmest light, its shining whiteness.

But what about the agony it causes, a concerned on-looker might ask?

That’s part of its virtue, Dean would reply; the smooth, unsullied flow of the grains making Alastair choke and scream is righteous in a way Dean isn’t.

And isn’t it ironic that Alastair can take the credit for that.

Dean’s hands don’t shake, though his chest is filled with shards of glass where his heart should be. He’s merely adding a little seasoning to his demon before carving the meat.

A few lovely folks on Discord are doing a daily prompt so I thought I'd use it as a warm up for Inktober! I may drabble some days instead of arting (or as well as, who knows).

Day 1 - Clouds

1. clouds
The faint blue lines are where I've done myself some shapes to fill on the rest of the days (and for Inktober too, maybe). Nothing more than 3 inches long, the circles are about 1.5 inches. It'll be a challenge for my poor eyesight to work small!

I've missed recording a few good uns in between, but here's a small sample of ones I made a note of.

First and foremost
Shelter From the Storm
This one was my gift and I'm so delighted with it. Oh my. So deliciously creepy and tense - a wonderful case fic with all the extra trimmings. It has all the elements of Supernatural that I adore - a truly macabre case, lots of shout outs to both the boys' past brushes with Hell, the impending doom of Amara's darkness in the background throughout and then amping up the hazard for both WInchesters in a really interesting twist. On top of all that, it's a great use of the Dylan lyrics!

dread in my heart
This one really got to me, I'm not entirely sure why. Except it was a beautifully written piece, and a great concept. Sam and Dean are trying to get round Chuck's machinations by resetting their lives, and find themselves in a uninverse disconcertinly similar to the Djinn-world in WIASNB. Told from Sam's POV, this ended up both chilling and emotionally charged, and I loved it. It might even be my fav so far.

Five Times
A truly charming look at JOdy and Donna developing their hunting skills and their friendship at the same time, with bonus Hurt!Winchesters cameo. This is everything Wayward Sisters could have been and wasn't.

Truth from Fiction
A lighthearted crossover with Arrow that brought a big smile to my face. I'm not a fan of Arrow but I've seen enough to recognise their characters and their voices seemed spot on. Read it for a good laugh!

This week fell at a bad time for me, as I was going away from the Thursday, plus two members of our already reduced team of nine ended up not taking part, while a third was not feeling it... I somehow doubt our team will take part again (at least not together in the same format). One invisible person added herself to our team early on then never replied to any emails (which is the only contact route GISH gave) so we have no idea who she was!

However, looking back at what I did, it wasn't too bad. I had said this year I was only going to do challenges I really fancied, and that I was going to try and make them as good as I possibily could. I don't think I quite managed that, but it was a moderate amount of fun! And my active team mates did some fricking awesome stuff, so there is that.

Anyhow, here is a glimpse of my (part) week.

#121 SIDE-BY-SIDE. You know those garden gnomes that dotted your grandmother’s backyard? Well, it’s been a while and now they have fallen on hard times. They have turned to a life of crime and misanthropy. Their little gnome hearts are filled with despair, hatred, and regret. Show us the before and after.

When gnomes go bad...things get very dark, very quick.

Just a small selection from this year's spn_summergen offerings so far. These are ones that have stood out for me in some way from the rest. It doesn't mean the rest aren't good or worth a look!

The Snake Which Cannot Cast its Skin -
Dean the snake whisperer - what a fabulous and original premise! The snake voices are so well thought out and the idea of snakes being an unseen ally for the boys (Dean and his Bigger You!) is intriguing. The magic is seamlessly woven into the case fic, and feels like a totally believable addition to what is otherwise a purely canon verse. The story is well written, the boys are in character and there's a very satisfying mix of SPN's best bits - humour, suspense, mild horror, and a problem to solve.

Nine-tenths of the law
A powerful and engrossing case fic which also provides a unique fix for the archangel condom plotline of seasons 4-5. There is something very beguiling about vodou, and I'm surprised it doesn't turn up in more fanfics. I think I've only read one, maybe two that touch on this world, and this one is so well written and colourful, it feels effortless. I didn't get the overpowering sense of place I've encountered in other stories set in Lousiana (I think it was Big Pink's SPN fanfic turned into a book I'm thinking of that did that particular trick so well you were almost sweating the humidity alongside the characters) but it didn't matter, because the story was gripping and original.

The Sixth Day
A beautifully written afterlife (and after the show) ficlet. This is the kind of ending that isn't an ending at all, but the next steps for Team Free Will 2.0, and it is gentle, and a little bit messed up, but simply perfect. All four lives are intertwined in this eternity, and the feeling of love and caring is strong - seriously, I envy a writer who can convey so much in so few words.

I haven't read gigglepud's story to go with this final prompt yet, but I'm sure it will be grand and I'm looking forward to reading it!

The story link HERE will be live sometime on 30th June (I'm posting a tad early as I'm out most of the day tomorrow with family).

Yes, I managed to miss the first day of [community profile] snowflake_challenge! Not a great start, but not to worry, because combining days 1 and 2 actually makes sense. Day 1 was:

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

My answer to that one is - right here is my happy place. Online, on my sites where I can have conversations with like-minded people about the show that I love, whether it's debating the direction Supernatural is taking or celebrating all the things that made it so addictive; whether it's about ships or kinks or gen fic vs gencest vs any kind of 'cest. Where I can make art and share it, and admire the fantastic talents that this fandom (and other fandoms) is so rich with. Where I can read imaginative, adventurous, thrilling, moving and sexy stories written by some great writers, and where I can post my own stories and get feedback that gives me the motivation to keep creating.

Which brings me nicely to Day 2.

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Here goes:
  1. I'm reccing this because I re-read it just this week, and it moved me just as much as it did the first time I read it. Close to the Sun in Lonely Lands by de_nugis. And no, I don't love this just because it was written for some of my reversebang art. It's awesome because it dissects Dean and Sam so beautifully into their component parts. Here's Dean the single focused, Sam-dedicated, big brother who doesn't know how to let go, and will go to extreme lengths to preserve Sam's life. And here's Sam - logical, exasperated, insightful and clever - finding a way to resolve their situation. It's fanfic gold.
  2. This one is one I only discovered very recently, though it was written back in 2007. Battering Ram by astolat. A future!Fic, set in a dystopian, post apocalyptic world, and the summary pretty much explains why it's so good. This imagery permeates the fic and it's so grimly beautiful I want to hold this story in my heart forever. I'm gonna hit the highway like a battering ram/On a silver black phantom bike/When the metal is hot and the engine is hungry/And we're all about to see the light.
  3. This isn't a single fic but a whole series by the same author - again, not new, but excellently done. I have a real weakness for Dark Angel's Alec, and minxmix writes him so well. But then she went and wrote a wonderful crossover AU, where Alec is Sam's son and it's just fabulous. All the SPN characters are totally in character, and the melding of the two worlds is fab. I'd recommend starting with With a Bang and take it from there.
I could add more but it's bed time so rather than miss another day, I'm posting!

Ugh! LJ took me to the new posting format and yep, it's still awful! Fortunately I found the button at the bottom of the page that meant I could come back to the old format. Phew.

But thank you all for supporting my art and minimal fic writing, and blogging over here on LJ. I appreciate each and every one of you and hope that 2019 will be awesome for you all.

Much love and happiness and group hugs!
