As I'm doing entries (for now, anyway!), a note to my future self. Do not buy ANY more paper or sketchbooks. Seriously.

I've signed up for the sketchbooking class (fingers crossed it will actually happen this term, as the last couple of courses have been cancelled due to lack of take up) and so I was up in my 'art room' trying to decide what book to take to fill up with the kind of experimental stuff Steve likes to prompt. I've got SO MANY SKETCHBOOKS, guys, it's not funny. I ended up with a pile of seven books already started, in various stages of completion, all good watercolour paper. I'm reluctant to use that for this course because a lot of the time we're just using pencil, or mixed media, or whatever, and you really don't need the 100% cotton for that, and cold pressed is probably not the best surface either.

But then I realised I'd recently ordered two more of those good watercolour books (in the sale, so I had to, right?), and the shelf I'd been stashing those on was actually two deep, which means for that make of watercolour book alone, I now have FIVE unopened, still wrapped. I checked my cupboard where I was supposed to be keeping the 100% cotton paper (blocks, books etc) and there were more in there (different brands), and more in the other cupboard, and then I discovered several different places I've been storing my aquabord/gesso boards etc and I've got a lot more of those than I thought.

So I eventually found the hot pressed 100% cotton Will Bailey sketchbook I'd started using for Steve's last evening course and am taking that with me. The moment I flicked through it I remembered going through this whole faff last time too. DOH!

I probably should take a day and have a proper sort out of everything in that room because my policy of shoving things in a drawer or on a shelf 'for now' is clearly getting out of hand.  From what I've seen today, I could draw or paint two pages a day and still not have used everything I've already got - and the worst thing is I now know that the good watercolour paper doesn't keep for that long before the sizing goes off. I feel a bit like I've become the 100% cotton watercolour paper equivalent of a crazy cat lady. (And I should probably add actual paint to that crazy too, since I've become a collector of pigments).

The strategy of having lots to make me less fearful of using it is actually causing a different kind of art paralysis where I have too many choices and can't decide what to do or which supplies to use.

And if all that isn't a massive first world problem, I don't know what is. What an idjit.

I may be doing several lists this year, either picking and choosing, or mixing and matching. Of course, I'll start off trying to do a drawing a day, and probably fizzle out part way through, but that's fine.

This is my own list.
2020 SPNtober promts

Plus Drawesome's Drawtober list.

And I might dabble in the Whumptober list too. Because why not.

https://youtu.be/SHu4qfKaruQThere were so many glorious prompts over at j2_jukebox but I failed so hard at them all! Ha ha!
I started a fic to go with this one, but it's nowhere near done, so I thought I'd try a quick sketch as a placeholder. In the fic Jared is eighteen so really he should be taller here. Just imagine he's sitting on a stool or something! LOL

The prompt was by marietwist - Rufus Wainwright's The Art Teacher. The lyrics (with the protagonist's sex changed) are below the picture.Read more... )

My artist friend Lois, who I met last year when we both painted pigs for the sculpture trail, makes a living by running art workshops as well as by selling her paintings and papercuts. I've been thinking about trying one of her workshops for a while now and when I saw she was running one relatively close (only 30 mins away by train), and that it was about working with dark and light tones, I thought I'd give it a go.

Sketchbooking class was fun last night though I'm not sure I ended up with the kind of page I was supposed to - well it didn't look much like anyone else's, any way. But I enjoyed myself.
The idea was to explore how a page could provide future inspiration and also to look at fitting a number of different unconnected images onto the page. Steve brought this box of miscellaneous oddments again, and some pcitures from magazines, and I ended up with the wee vase, a fox and a lacrosse match. When I'd finished with those three, I got another couple of pics to fill the spaces, and then we ran out of time.Read more... )

There's always a Misha and the Queen picture to do, and I did wait a bit this year before claiming it, in case someone else wanted to have a go. Nobody did.
This year's was On a desolate, dusty prairie, a ranch hand rescues the local school marm from a runaway horse. Create a drawing of
Misha & the Queen of England in the Wild West. (You pick who plays the school marm and who plays the ranch hand.)

What it says on the tin. It's strangely beautiful (though I could have done without the fancy effects, I think it is fascinating enough just watching the flow of the dance with the tattoos and the veil.
Obviously as the dancer is nekkid, this is NSFW!

So in the olden days, I used to make my own birthday and Christmas cards for people. When I was eighteen I was into Indian miniatures and Japanese painting, even though I was rubbish at immitating either! LOL

wedraweveryday A weekly task from February - I'm catching up very slowly! Though strictly speaking this wasn't following the task as given because I just drew it in PS using PS pencil brushes and didn't go through the steps.

My first of two spn_reversebang artings, and this was my first completed art submission too. I was lucky enough to get snaffled by morrezela, who then said she wanted to write one of my favourite tropes, amnesia fic. So double yay!

I was looking round our very damp cellar, after bagging up the Christmas tree and deciding it was probably ok to store it down there as long as it was off the ground, and I found some cardboard boxes full of stuff. The cardboard was looking worse for wear, some of it was covered in white mould and I thought the contents were going to be beyond saving, but the first box I investigated had some pads of nice coloured art paper, and though the ring bindings were a bit rusty, the paper itself looked possibly salvageable. Then I flicked through the first pad and found this drawing.Read more... )

It's as finished as I can get it, I think! Now I have to frame it for Mal before our Christmas lunch tomorrow. I hope the poor old boy is feeling better, he had a stinking cold last week when we met up and shouldn't have been driving.

As many of you have likely seen on various newspapers and news stations around the world, millions of people from Syria have been displaced by the fighting going on in the country. Some have fled to the surrounding Middle Eastern nations but as those neighbors have been maxed out many more have continued onward to Europe and elsewhere in search of a safe place to live. Many have traveled with very little if anything in the way of day to day needs and the various agencies are struggling to provide anything more than just the bare essentials for so many people. [livejournal.com profile] alycat made a post yesterday on her journal highlighting the difficulties the refugees are facing and asking for help going above and beyond to take care of them. So now I'm amplifying that call and passing it along to all of you by running this charity community.

As of right now there will be at least two options, either buy it now or traditional auctions with the possibility of more being added later if there's an interest. Both the buy it now and auction posts will open tonight, October 8, and run until Thursday, October 22, 11:59 pm Central Daylight Time. If there are any questions please feel free to reach out to me via PM or email at ladysimoriah@gmail.com.

Please feel free to signal boost this relief effort wherever you can on LJ, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Let's spread the word people!

My thread for bids for art is HERE
I promise, I might be slow filling any commission but I will get there in the end!

Just thought I'd post the first stage of a possible pic. Jared as the Knave of Hearts.
And more importantly, does anyone know what has happened to oddishly? Her journal has been deleted, it's a bit worrying...
Updated to say - panic over, oddishly is back.

There's a fabulous exhibition in the Art Gallery across the road from me at the moment - childrens' book illustrations. I think I'm going to have to visit as many times as possible while it's one - there are some totally gorgeous drawings, paintings, even paper cuts to ogle, and boy, I wish I could draw like that...

Natty has inspired me to get out my sketch book
The result is loosely based on Matt Cohen...I suck at likenesses so it doesn't look much like him!
And it is a photo of a sketch so a bit wonky.  Other than that it's great (Hee!)
