This seemed to fit Drawesome's challenge #53 - Alternative surface rather well! The surface being primed fibreglass, of course.

This one is another Asian elephant for a trail in Southend on Sea. As always, don't repost this anywhere, as we're not supposed to show any details of our designs before the trail is launched.

The theme is endangered species in Asia - this side includes Cat Ba Langurs, an Asian elephant and the wee orangutan on the trunk. I was pretty pleased with the amount of progress I made today.I sprayed the base coat a few days ago, and today I spent about 4.5 hours on it. I'm hoping I can get it all done by the end of next week, so I can go see my mum.

None of these animals are completely finished so bear with me.

For this month's Drawesome challenge to explore unconventional body shapes and sizes in art. No instagram ready glam here.

I'd been wondering what to draw, then I thought about all the wonderful and various models we've had for our life drawing, so here are a few of my sketches.

Kaz
Kaz is in her forties, a belly dancer and cyclist

Brenda
I think in her fifties, early 60s, an excellent sitter

Lady Contrary (Burlesque, you can check her out on Instagram. This was her first time life modelling.)

Gerald
Ex army, very upright and still when modelling. Early 70s.

I've left out the models who were more conventional shapes, but we used to have such a great variety of people, I really miss those sessions!

A second idea for Drawesome community's challenge to rectify the fact that BIPOC people are severely under represented in the fantasy genre. Here's a suitably mischievous Aboriginal Puck, ready to try some tricks on his fellow fairies.

Art-wise - Ohuhu alcohol markers are scary, folks! Don't know why I thought I'd do this using them. The second version is just to see what it looked like with a background, added digitally.

I've decided I don't like doing these scribble arts. I can see how the results are kind of cool, and really love what everyone else has been doing but the process itself makes me really angry. It's so weird. I don't know if it's the lack of control or what, but I find I get crosser and crosser - even when I can see the picture taking shape and getting 'better'.
So this'll probably be the last one (until I forget the frustrated feelings and try again LOL)

Blimey! First completed

drawesome challenge for an AGE!

I combined this one with the Sky Portrait Artist of the Week, and tried to draw dancer Oti Mabusi. It's not quite right as a likeness, but I kind of like it all the same. I tried the technique of not sketching the features at all, but starting with all the lightest areas, and amazingly, the proportions actually worked. (Mostly)

I've been doing various little challenges via Instagram artists in an attempt to practice new things, like gouache and watercolour techniques.
Firstly there's the Pantone challenge by Bigbluetang, where she sets a pantone colour and we try and do something arty on a square of that colour. I have a box of 100 Pantone postcards so I'm using those. So far I've done a few, with big gaps in between (Bigbluetang is doing one a day for 30 days!)
The surface is rather shiny so it's not the easiest to paint on, plus it's a bit small (about 2.5 inches square), so they are varying in their successfulness.
This is one I did today. I'm not over fond of it, but it's ok I suppose.( Read more... )

This was to draw something using a single line, not lifting pen from paper. I admit, this is my third attempt! It actually needed some forethought and planning about where to start and even then there were still some areas I had to go back over the same place. I'm sure it could be done in a much more clever way but... yeah. I was happy enough with it!
