It's me and [livejournal.com profile] amypond45 again, folks! The dynamic duo... LOL  Read the story here on AO3.

Actually I was not very dynamic this time and only managed a single piece of art, but for once it's one I really like quite a lot.

It's a bit spoilery for a scene in the story so you might want to read the fic first.

Hopefully you will all recognise this setting from the show! I was delighted to have the chance to draw one of my all time favourite scenes - I think that whole sequence in Lazarus Rising is so beautifully shot.Read more... )

A new partner in crime for this year's [livejournal.com profile] spneldritchbang and a delightfully angsty and creepy story by EnTeSelene. Perfect for the season!

Click on the Banner for the story on AO3
Title banner with lettering made from splatted ink blots reading "Soul Eater". On the left is a barely visible silhouette of Dean Winchester. Sub text reads "An SPN Eldritch Bang Offering, Story by EnTeSelene, Art by Amberdreams

Key to Dean's part of the story is the risky business of catching out trains, so I had to try something around that
Night time scene with a red freight train coming diagonally towards the viewer, lights blazing. Halfway down the train a negative white sihouette of a man is jumping onto the train, seemingly chased by a roiling mass of dark tendrils. Painting is violets
The night time background with the train was done with oil sticks, mixed with linseed oil and moved around with a paintbrush with variable success. Dean and the inky Soul Eater were added using digital layers.

And the image of Dean, alone, being menaced by the soul eater was also something I had to try
Blue pencil drawing of Dean Winchester seated on the ground hugging his knees surrounded by an inky blot-darkness which is inside and outside of him

Now the rambling part 😂

There are actually loads of images that I was inspired by in the story, but alas, deadlines and other things always mean options have to be narrowed down, and those two main images were my favourites from the start.
So first was the searching for suitable references (American freight trains, anyone?) and some sketching to work out the concepts.

For Dean's sitting position I was using this behind the scenes photo from the finale, but on reflection, I changed it so Dean was looking down - both because it mirrored his feelings of despair, but also because in the story he's trying to avoid eye contact to contain the monster.
SPN Finale behind the scenes photo of Jensen sitting on a pebble beach with a bleached dead treeroot system framing his figure
I made a silhouette of Dean leaping onto the train, which I then used in negative digitally on the oil painting of the train, and again in the banner.
I wanted the soul eater to be something organic looking, so I had a very messy time with a pipette and a straw, splashing india ink and blowing it to create some inky messes to use - and they appear in every picture.
All the [pictures are traditional media which I then played with digitally to combine the different elements. So seated Dean was drawn separately with a Derwent blu-ink coloured pencil, and the Soul Eater was an ink blot page which was added digitally.

Hmm - Blue Dean and the Inkblots could be a 1960s band name...

It's been a while since I posted anything arty that isn't fanart, but I've recently started a new art class, similar to my old sketchbooking one, where the challenge is to try lots of different things and push yourself out of your comfort zone.

The theme of the first two weeks has been caricature, and after sticking to pencil last week, this week it was all about going straight in with the indian ink, and using bamboo pens and sticks to make sure I wasn't too precious. Wanda Gág with her giant palette was the first one I did today, and I really liked it!

It's World Watercolour Month and I've been doing a few outside of the various fandom challenges, so thought I might as well post them here.

I got a nice small square book with an adorable owl cover, so I decided the obvious thing to put in it was birds. It's Arches 200gsm paper, not too many pages and so shouldn't be impossibly daunting to fill. That's the theory anyway!

I'm still in two minds whether to go for just watercolour, or ink and wash so I think the birds will be vary the options a bit. I may add some ink to Jude, because there's a lot of texture in her feathers...though I am quite liking her like this so, maybe not.

This JIB was number 13 and actually puts us back into the right order, and happened at the right time! I decided before the convention that I'd go to the small town of Lucca for a few days, with the intention of doing some plein air sketching/painting.

I'd visited Lucca on a day trip from Pisa back in 2018, and loved it. The town centre is completely surrounded by massive walls and bastions, dating from the 16-17th century, which give it a unique flavour. It has the usual medieval narrow streets, but because of the walls, traffic is even more constrained than usual, and some areas are pedestrianised. The apartment I was staying in could hardly have been more central, literally two minutes walk from the ex and current cathedrals, five minutes to anywhere else. The other great thing about the town is that the walls - ramparts really - are so wide at the top they've been planted with great avenues of trees and there's a road that runs right the way round the town. The only traffic allowed up there is the occasional police car/maintainance vehicles, and bicycles. So it's a lovely place to to to just wander along and soak in the atmosphere.

For once, my plans to art while out and about were fulfilled, so I'm sticking this post into the latest Drawesome challenge of 'draw what you see'. I do have photos too, but this post is all about the sketching.

First day, first sketch. This is in a teeny slim sketchbook, ordinary paper, using a waterproof gel pen. I went for a walk around the walls and stopped here. The church is San Frediano, and the singing I was listening to was from the Palazzo Pfanner. I wasn't actually anywhere near the botanical gardens, in spite of my caption!Read more... )

I am a bit late doing my own TAE22 entry, which meant I forgot to post a promotion for the event here - but there's still time to register (for free!), and complete and send your own arty postcard! The event is a global one, held every year, and all the art is posted online as well as going into a physical exhibition. This year's is in York in the UK, and the charity the money raised will benefit is The Encephalitis Society. You can find out all about the event HERE.

I wasn't sure what to do this year - for my first one I sent in a fanart watercolour of Sam Winchester, last year I inked and watercoloured a phoenix. So I wanted to do something different. Then I was trawling through Instagram and saw a wire sculpture of Poseidon and felt inspired.

I'm thinking this is more Fangorn than underwater sea god, but it's open to interpretation!

I dunno. I had an idea in my head and it just didn't turn out right. I also learned charcoal pencil doesn't work on top of graphite, and ink is questionable. Plus of course, graphite doesn't scan terribly well

But regardless. Here's a Dean portrait.

My second [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema. It just had to be done, right? Jared as Conan, Jensen as the very annoyed not-so-helpless maiden.

This was to draw something using a single line, not lifting pen from paper. I admit, this is my third attempt! It actually needed some forethought and planning about where to start and even then there were still some areas I had to go back over the same place. I'm sure it could be done in a much more clever way but... yeah. I was happy enough with it!

Obscutober's word was abendrot, which is the colours of a sunset. Whumptober's prompt had Winchesters written all over it - I've got you. I could pretend this also covers our Drawesome prompt of alchemy because the chemistry between these two is ever-present, but that's probably stretching it a bit LOL
