I'd completely forgotten to post this Marvel art of Katy Chen (Chen Ruiwen) I did for the Marvellous Coloring for a Cause project.  It's intended as a download and print colouring page (or download and digitally colour!). If you click on the monochrome version you should be taken through to Flickr and be able to download a HQ version if you're so inclined.
I just added some basic colour on one version because I wanted to have this on my new phone case!

Katy was my fave character in the whole of Shang Chi.

Realised I'd forgotten to cross post here! So this is a bit of a catch up.

So fun to take part in a new event aimed at bringing all sides of fandom together, the SPN ProShip Big Bang. Hopefully it will become a fixture in the SPN calendar. Many thinks to the mods for setting it up and making it such a welcoming place.
My author wrote an interesting AU spin on the Winchesters and their destiny, make sure to check it out HERE on AO3!

I started off thinking I'd do something in watercolour, but I kept working on my initial sketch of Cas and Dean trying out some new coloured pencils and ended up liking the effects I was getting, so ran with the coloured pencils for the Crowley side too.

The timing of the bang wasn't the best for me, as this time of year is when loads of design deadlines fall for the sculpture trails, so I only did the two drawings in the end, mashing them together to form a single image.

Descended_from_Hufflepuffs was a pleasure to work with, and I enjoyed their take on the Winchester brother's unbreakable bond!

It's World Watercolour Month and I've been doing a few outside of the various fandom challenges, so thought I might as well post them here.

I got a nice small square book with an adorable owl cover, so I decided the obvious thing to put in it was birds. It's Arches 200gsm paper, not too many pages and so shouldn't be impossibly daunting to fill. That's the theory anyway!

So far I've done three birdies.

I'm still in two minds whether to go for just watercolour, or ink and wash so I think the birds will be vary the options a bit. I may add some ink to Jude, because there's a lot of texture in her feathers...though I am quite liking her like this so, maybe not.

Drawesome is a friendly, multifandom art community, and sets a monthly challenge. I haven't actually managed to do a fill for an age, but am just scraping in at the end of this one. 😂

Here's a charcoal drawing of an African dryad.

POC dryad

For those who like to know - it's on a roughish 100% cotton rag paper which I wouldn't use again for this media, it didn't work that well. I used ordinary charcoal, a blending stump (and my hand!) and a kneaded eraser.

I’m quite overdue a post, but I’ve been busy, busy, busy…

Yesterday I had my left eye lasered – a laser capsulotomy because the capsule behind the artificial lens was getting cloudy. I’d been warned this might happen, though I’d been under the impression it was because of the steroid drops, and that it was a kind of clean up thing. In fact it’s something that commonly happens with cataract ops, and it sounds like it should be a one off as it actually makes a hole in the capsule.

It really wasn’t a pleasant thing, even though numbing drops meant I couldn’t really feel much. She put a large contact lens over the eye and then held onto that to keep the eyeball still while she zapped with the laser. It took a while longer than I’d been told, presumably because my capsule was ‘a bit thick’ and I wasn’t enjoying it one bit.

Anyway , it’s done now, and I think it has helped, I’m pretty sure my vision in that eye is sharper now, so the clouding must have been more bothersome than I’d thought.

In happier news, I’ve finished my Bayduck Tapestry giant duck, and she’s gone to Hastings for the trail starting in June. Now I’m working on two giraffes for Edinburgh’s trail. One’s finished and varnished, the other is getting there.

Yes, they are tall! 2.5m, to be exact.

I've been doing various little challenges via Instagram artists in an attempt to practice new things, like gouache and watercolour techniques.
Firstly there's the Pantone challenge by Bigbluetang, where she sets a pantone colour and we try and do something arty on a square of that colour. I have a box of 100 Pantone postcards so I'm using those. So far I've done a few, with big gaps in between (Bigbluetang is doing one a day for 30 days!)
The surface is rather shiny so it's not the easiest to paint on, plus it's a bit small (about 2.5 inches square), so they are varying in their successfulness.
This is one I did today. I'm not over fond of it, but it's ok I suppose.Read more... )

I may be doing several lists this year, either picking and choosing, or mixing and matching. Of course, I'll start off trying to do a drawing a day, and probably fizzle out part way through, but that's fine.

This is my own list.
2020 SPNtober promts

Plus Drawesome's Drawtober list.

And I might dabble in the Whumptober list too. Because why not.

i'm feeling rather sleepy and putting it down to the course of antibiotics I'm on for my tooth implant. I don't think of dentistry as surgery but the info sheet the dentist gave me talks about post surgery actions so I suppose it was. Over an hour of jaw achingly unpleasant drilling and bone strengthening... yeah, I wouldn't particularly choose to do this again for fun. LOL

Anyway, art-wise, I've been doing birthday art for my friend Lois, who's into foxes big time, but also loves the esoteric and Green Men. So I thought I'd combine the two for her card, and did some watercolours for her.
Here's the fox sketch

I actually managed to resist adding linework when I'd done with the watercolours, which makes a change. 😁

These are my Roman Szmal colours, and I really like them. I'd definitely recommend these for anyone looking at starting watercolours - they are great quality, but also exceedingly good value for money. They are Polish and handmade with honey as a binder, so some pans are quite sticky, but that also makes them very easy to activate. The colours are all rich and a lot of them are single pigments which is good. They also have some gorgeous granulating mixed pigment colours. All the paints are full pans, and I think in the US they are even cheaper than in the UK - you can buy them via Jackson's art supplies, or in Europe there's a Spanish seller, Artemiranda, whose prices were comparable. They work out about half the cost of brands like Daniel Smith but all the reviews I've seen from expert watercolourists say the quality is just as good, and the range of colours to choose from is really good too.

Update on my non fannish artings.

I've been trying to do a little something every day, to keep myself going. To persuade myself it's easy, I'm using the smal Moleskine travel watercolour sketchbook (it was relatively inexpensive and is only A5 sized). The aim is the doing, so I'm trying not to worry about 'finishing' or perfecting whatever I'm doing.

So far I've done the following.
Some watercolour flowers (no reference, trying out colour combinations and wet on wet techniques).Read more... )

*waves from lockdown* hope everyone is doing ok!

I'm actually quite busy at the moment, which feels weird when most people I know aren't. Mind you, once this elephant is done, I will be looking around for things to fill the days...

A few lovely folks on Discord are doing a daily prompt so I thought I'd use it as a warm up for Inktober! I may drabble some days instead of arting (or as well as, who knows).

Day 1 - Clouds

1. clouds
The faint blue lines are where I've done myself some shapes to fill on the rest of the days (and for Inktober too, maybe). Nothing more than 3 inches long, the circles are about 1.5 inches. It'll be a challenge for my poor eyesight to work small!
