Actually I was not very dynamic this time and only managed a single piece of art, but for once it's one I really like quite a lot.

It's a bit spoilery for a scene in the story so you might want to read the fic first.

Hopefully you will all recognise this setting from the show! I was delighted to have the chance to draw one of my all time favourite scenes - I think that whole sequence in Lazarus Rising is so beautifully shot.( Read more... )

Key to Dean's part of the story is the risky business of catching out trains, so I had to try something around that
Night time scene with a red freight train coming diagonally towards the viewer, lights blazing. Halfway down the train a negative white sihouette of a man is jumping onto the train, seemingly chased by a roiling mass of dark tendrils. Painting is violets
The night time background with the train was done with oil sticks, mixed with linseed oil and moved around with a paintbrush with variable success. Dean and the inky Soul Eater were added using digital layers.

And the image of Dean, alone, being menaced by the soul eater was also something I had to try

Now the rambling part 😂

There are actually loads of images that I was inspired by in the story, but alas, deadlines and other things always mean options have to be narrowed down, and those two main images were my favourites from the start.
So first was the searching for suitable references (American freight trains, anyone?) and some sketching to work out the concepts.

For Dean's sitting position I was using this behind the scenes photo from the finale, but on reflection, I changed it so Dean was looking down - both because it mirrored his feelings of despair, but also because in the story he's trying to avoid eye contact to contain the monster.

I made a silhouette of Dean leaping onto the train, which I then used in negative digitally on the oil painting of the train, and again in the banner.
I wanted the soul eater to be something organic looking, so I had a very messy time with a pipette and a straw, splashing india ink and blowing it to create some inky messes to use - and they appear in every picture.
All the [pictures are traditional media which I then played with digitally to combine the different elements. So seated Dean was drawn separately with a Derwent blu-ink coloured pencil, and the Soul Eater was an ink blot page which was added digitally.

My second Time travel bang, this time with the lovely Masoena. The moment I saw the prompt included travel to ancient Egypt, I had to snaffle it!!

Process is unexciting:
Researching poses (used a screen cap from the Walking Dead for Tim with the shotgun, no reference used for Jason), sketching and then drawing the final scene in my Arches sketchbook to paint. No progress pics because Flickr doesn't like .heic files and I haven't had time to convert them.

This feels like a rare post these days but many thanks to my lovely author sixtysevenautomatic for giving me some much needed inspiration!

I did several bad sketches of Sam kneeling but forgot to photograph them so will spare you.

So fun to take part in a new event aimed at bringing all sides of fandom together, the SPN ProShip Big Bang. Hopefully it will become a fixture in the SPN calendar. Many thinks to the mods for setting it up and making it such a welcoming place.

I started off thinking I'd do something in watercolour, but I kept working on my initial sketch of Cas and Dean trying out some new coloured pencils and ended up liking the effects I was getting, so ran with the coloured pencils for the Crowley side too.

The timing of the bang wasn't the best for me, as this time of year is when loads of design deadlines fall for the sculpture trails, so I only did the two drawings in the end, mashing them together to form a single image.

Descended_from_Hufflepuffs was a pleasure to work with, and I enjoyed their take on the Winchester brother's unbreakable bond!

Posting solo because my author had to withdraw from the bang for personal reasons, but hopefully the art will still make sense!
In summary - Clint and Natasha are sent into the past on a mission, and live for some time in 1950s New York.

I've done two illustrations.

First is Natasha and Clint in a crowded subway carriage.

I took the brilliant composition from a 1950s/60s advert illustration by Mac Conner, and reinterpreted it in collaged rough gouached paper and ink.

The second picture is also gouache and shows Natasha walking alone on 44th Street, using a period photo as a reference.

The fic will be posted later, serialised in chapters, so I'll add a link when I have it, for those interested.

Yoann has been the best and most patient author, and the story is lovely (even if I ended up sniffling over that damn Barn yet again).

Summary: Canon divergent Supernatural where Dean still kills monsters. What's different are the humans he kills, the reason he does it, and how Sam begins to handle the clean up afterwards. Dean is judge, jury and executioner to seeming innocents and Sam finds a way to keep them safe and off the radar with a mixture of law knowledge, an extensive fascination with botany and a bit of learned magic. Their devotion grows deeper and more feral until it's all consuming and burns bright hot, defying anything in their path to happiness.

A little intro to explain today's art spamming! Long story short - real life series of extraordinary events (including holidays, covid, flight cancellations, being stranded in Hungary...) mean I'm now posting THREE bangs today, with apologies to ALL my lovely hard working and talented authors and to the mods of the respective bangs.
