Damp cellars and random art
Jan. 6th, 2016 10:10 pmI was looking round our very damp cellar, after bagging up the Christmas tree and deciding it was probably ok to store it down there as long as it was off the ground, and I found some cardboard boxes full of stuff. The cardboard was looking worse for wear, some of it was covered in white mould and I thought the contents were going to be beyond saving, but the first box I investigated had some pads of nice coloured art paper, and though the ring bindings were a bit rusty, the paper itself looked possibly salvageable. Then I flicked through the first pad and found this drawing.

I have absolutely no memory of this picture, or much idea when I drew this, except it must have been at least twenty-five years ago. If not longer. So I can't rememebr what I was thinking about when I was drawing it. That's my Mum with me as a baby in the centre, and then a portrait of me, but the old woman at the bottom is clearly a made up character, while the bearded man at the top looks like Paul's dad. Which is strange. I can't think why I'd have drawn Eric and not my own Dad, given that I've got my Mum in the picture too. Unless my Dad was supposed to be somewhere else in the design. Who knows? It's a mystery!
I admit, I was actually shocked at the quality, I was never particularly good at portraits, but that actually does look very much like me, and though I could find fault with the portrait of my Mum, I think that is instantly recognisable as the photo I used as a reference. It's quite encouraging!
