I was looking round our very damp cellar, after bagging up the Christmas tree and deciding it was probably ok to store it down there as long as it was off the ground, and I found some cardboard boxes full of stuff. The cardboard was looking worse for wear, some of it was covered in white mould and I thought the contents were going to be beyond saving, but the first box I investigated had some pads of nice coloured art paper, and though the ring bindings were a bit rusty, the paper itself looked possibly salvageable. Then I flicked through the first pad and found this drawing.
Celtic portraits Mum & self

I have absolutely no memory of this picture, or much idea when I drew this, except it must have been at least twenty-five years ago. If not longer. So I can't rememebr what I was thinking about when I was drawing it. That's my Mum with me as a baby in the centre, and then a portrait of me, but the old woman at the bottom is clearly a made up character, while the bearded man at the top looks like Paul's dad. Which is strange. I can't think why I'd have drawn Eric and not my own Dad, given that I've got my Mum in the picture too. Unless my Dad was supposed to be somewhere else in the design. Who knows? It's a mystery!

I admit, I was actually shocked at the quality, I was never particularly good at portraits, but that actually does look very much like me, and though I could find fault with the portrait of my Mum, I think that is instantly recognisable as the photo I used as a reference. It's quite encouraging!

There was nothing else in the sketch book so it was lucky I flicked through as I was all ready to chuck the lot in the bin. LOL

That's incredible - I instantly recognised the girl as you so you're right about it being a good likeness!

For someone who hates straight lines, I am most impressed with the celtic knots!

The whole thing is pretty cool though!

I used to try to draw knotwork and those spirals a fair bit - got into it when I was studying the Anglo Saxons. Fantastic art like the Lindisfarne Gospels...

I love how all the people appear to be surrounded by the old woman's hair. The celtic scroll is pretty awesome too. Great work.

Yeah I think the idea was some sort of flow of time in her hair, maybe?

That's really good honey and I spotted you straight away, so for someone who doesn't think she's any good at portraits, you rocked this one! What a treasure!

That's really lovely! I can totally recognize you as the girl, and I really love the Celtic knot-work pattern. And somehow the whole thing just flows together like you're telling a story! Very cool.

I've a feeling I was telling a story, but for the life of me I have no clue what it might have been...

Wow - what a wonderful find! I immediately recognised you, and it certainly looks like there was a planned design here. Gorgeous portraits and drawings.

Thanks! I suppose I'll just have to reconcile myself to not knowing what my past self's plan was now... :D

That's really lovely, so dreamlike and yet such beautiful portraiture.

My family has a long history with flooding cellars, and I've never gotten anything this pretty out of them!

Well all the rest of the stuff down there was mouldy so I think it's all heading for the bin when I return from visiting my Mum. Sadly, that includes a box full of my old school books. But as they are of no interest to anyone but me, that is probably a good time/excuse for me to shed the past. I was really down there looking for a box of old comics from 1974 that I know existed when we moved house but I can't seem to track down.

I love finding old sketch books. It's always surprising to see what I was interested in a what time in my life (and what has improved and what hasn't). I tried to keep as much as I could from art school for that reason, but many of my high school sketch pads have been lost to various moves and fits of cleaning/pique.

This sketch has lovely movement.

I always kept everything but clearly not necessarily in the right place... It is fun to look at old stuff.
