I'm visiting my mum for the first time since last October when she had her operation, and she sent me into town today to sort out her phone, which seemed to have died. I called into one of the mobile phone shops and got her phone sorted pretty quickly, but then thought I might as well see if I could get a better deal on my own phone since my contract runs out soon.

The customer service girl was nice and friendly, and in the course of sorting out what sim-only deal was best for me I mentioned that a few times a year I go to conventions so might need more data allowance then. Which led to a very nice conversation about Wandavision, TFATWS, Marvel in general and how she misses Wales Comic Con. I love it when I randomly run into another geeky person. They are invariably so happy to natter about what they love. We even discussed Supernatural's recent fandom woes and the fallout from the finale in the Destiel camp.

Gina the Wales Comic Con volunteer may have a few other things on her mind than whether conventions start up again over the next few months/years though, since she's expecting identical twin girls in August. I hope she keeps her geekiness alive and passes it onto her girls. Her X-Men passion and her hubby's love of MCU might help that happen.

Anyway, that, and getting my monthly phone bill down to a third of what I've been paying, has left me in a very good mood!

I've been fairly busy lately, in between snoozing for England. Yesterday's highlight was getting to meet the totally charming [livejournal.com profile] kazluvsbooks, over from the Land Down Under - with the only downside being I had to pre-book my trains so only got to spend a couple of hours with her and her lovely friend Julie, [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal, [livejournal.com profile] dizzojay and Sue (a fellow JIBcon-goer).

Spot the hobbit.
2018 London fangirl meet up

What else?

Art stuff
I've been working on a poster for my friend Wendy, who's off to Paris next weekend for a Spartacus convention. I'll do a post about that when the convention is over. Inktober is coming up so I'm hoping to manage an ink drawing a day for that, starting (unsurprisingly!) on Monday 1st. Though I may not be able to post them every day due to being away in Venice for a few days, followed by Manchester.

Wild in Art news - I've now sent off two designs for Plymouth's Elmer the Elephant trail next year, and one out of a possible three designs for Ipswich's Elmer trail. The latest announcements have been that there will be a trail of wallabies in the Isle of Man and gorillas in Jersey!! So I will be designing for those critters soon. Keep everything crossed for some of my designs getting picked to paint in a few months time when they do their shortlisting and selections!

Oh! And JIBland in Rome next May just got a tad more interesting, as it seems highly likely the next guest to be announced is Sebastian Stan!!! Got to say, I'm going to be rather chuffed if this is true. For those of you that don't know, JIBland is a two day multifandom event that's been tagged onto JIBcon for the last few years. Attendance for JIBland is usually much lower than for JIB, but with someone like Seb headlining, who knows!

I don't know if you are aware, but two articles - Article 11 and Article 13 - that could greatly impact on our ability to post fanfic and fan art online have been passed by the European Parliament. However, there is still a chance to lessen the impact, by urging our MEPs to make sure options that avoid filtering uploads or restricting links are chosen.

This legislation could mean automatic filters will prevent us uploading anything that resembles something considered to be IPR beloinging to the big corporates. (I very much doubt it will help small businesses in any way!) So phrases used in Supernatural, or images that reuse recognisable stuff from the show may be blocked.

We need as many people as possible to contact our MEPs now.

If you need more information, this article is pretty good at explaining what's going on and what we need to say to our MEPs. Find their email, do it today. This legislation is draconian, unecessary - crazy. If we can do anything to stop it, we must.

quickreaver and a couple of other bods have set up a new discussion platform on Discord for all artists and writers. It's dynamic like Twitter but allows different discussion threads and topics, so you can (hopefully) keep track of information and chats better than Twitter. It's also only open to the invited, so any wank can be stamped on, and there's a certain amount of privacy to discussions. Anyhow, quickreaver explains it better than me:

I've set up a Discord server for authors and artists in the SPN/SPN RPF fandom, as a place for Sam-and-Dean-and-J2 fans to network, get excited, offer advice, opportunities and concrit, dish about the show, etc. (Destiel has several big, active servers already running; if you'd like their locations, let me know! I'll point you that'a way. I'm not spurning Destiel, but you simply might be better served elsewhere.) Discord really isn't that tough to use--it's pretty much a glorified chat room--but of course there's no one in the new server right now, so it's pretty quiet. I'm hoping it'll catch on, though, because for me, one of the most rewarding parts of fandom is its gift economy: the free sharing of ideas and fanworks. The wank on some SM platforms has gotten so unavoidable, it sucks the joy right out of everything. I do enjoy a good rant every once in a while--I'm certainly not saying we have to be Susie Sunshine all the time--but there's a limit to the level of attacks and name-calling I wanna see, on the regular. I was craving a place for education and concrit too. So here we have it!

https://discordapp.com/invite/7M35sMRCorrected new link!!

Come join us and let's see if we can make it work!

Okay, LFCC is no San Diego, but it's big enough for me. This year our little band of hunters didn't have any GISHWHES tasks to do, so we could wander round and do our own thing, which actually meant at times we were like ships that pass in the night. I even persuaded Paul to come, and he enjoyed his mini-geek fest, going to a few of the free panels and ogling the Wonder Women and Cat Women. He has a bit of a thing for slinky women in black lycra LOL.

The other day I had a little moan and whinge about stuff  (Here).

One thing my little moment of childish weakness has taught me is that it's kind of shocking how many of us feel the same way!  To quote/paraphrase kalliel, it seems that whole "why does everyone seems to be better friends with each other than they are with me? :( Or like, man, I wish people did X or Y thing, or felt moved to email me/message me/etc. the way they do with their other friends..." is a common niggle for a lot of us. Maybe it's a trait of an introverted personality? Because I know many of us are here on LJ or online because we have introvert tendencies.

But when I post that rather inarticulate grumble what happens? Everyone rallies round to show me just how silly I was being.
I wonder whether we are all doomed to want to be closer to the people who are busy being close to someone else, just to be contrary. I do remember feeling exactly this way when I was at school too, and I'd love to know why the hell I never grew out of it!
And if I'm honest, I couldn't cope if loads of people suddenly decided to email me about stuff, I just wouldn't have time to deal with it! I have enough trouble as it is, trying to keep up with all the different communities and people on my Flist, and my other friends and family on Facebook and in real life. I wasn't made for having lots of friends, I'm used to having two or three at the most, and this (ok it's mostly virtual) is the largest group of friends I've ever had!
So really, I'm very grateful for each and every one of you. People here are so accepting and generous.

I'll apologise in advance if I ever miss a personal post of yours, but I do have an open door for PMs here if anyone does want to chat about stuff. I'm just hoping you won't all feel the need to message me at once LOL!

Interesting questions - it doesn't take too long to fill in either.

As some might know, I am a research associate at X-University. (Yes, I will tell you where if you want to know, but I am trying to have at least a thin veil between my work and my fandom identity right, and how do you think this is this going, Nátt?.)

I am currently re-doing a survey I did for my thesis five years ago to examine if/how the fandom experience and identity might have changed since then. The results will be published in a scholarly work at some point.

If any of you would like to do the survey (and maybe throw me a comment if you find anything that doesn't work or need clarification, that'd be fantastic. Survey questions can't be changed, though, as they mirror the 2011 survey) it is here: 2016 Survey.

The survey is anonymous, and nothing, neither IP or anything else, is logged. Any questions, throw me a PM or mail.

Feel free to share the link.

I missed my original date for this post but here it is, better late than never. A little celebration of the fantastic breadth of talent in Fandom.
Bear in mind, this is just a small sample of what's out there, and it's only the tip of the iceberg of wonderful art I've admired over the years. Plus, they are not in any particular order. I LOVE THEM ALL and I wish I could just post everything here because it's all SO GOOD.

But I can't, so here's a selection.

Adventures with chomaisky Part II took place today when she took a day out of her busy sightseeing schedule to visit my place of residence. She suffered through her first (and probably last) cheese scone, got fed more history than she knew what to do with, met Mabel the tawny owl and a pond full of mallard, cormorants, Canada geese and (appropriately) Mandarin ducks, survived the heaps of junk round my house and came face to face with a woolly mammoth.

I don't know about young cho, but I'm bloody knackered! Ha ha ha!
Here we are saying goodbye at the station - maybe one day I will make it to China.

The hubster took this photo, hence the looking down from on high angle, though yes, cho really is that much taller than me so...fair dos.

Yesterday I got to meet the lovely chomaisky in person in London - how awesome is that? Even better, we are meeting up again on Thursday when cho is coming to mine to sample the delights of my little town. So clearly my cunning plan to bore her to death by taking her round the Magna Carta exhibition in the British Library didn't faze her at all.

Anyone based in the UK with an interest in fannish things - did you know there is a programme on Thursday night this week talking about women who write fanfic, and cosplay etc? It sounds interesting! For anyone outside the UK - it is a BBC Radio 4 programme so may be available via podcast or BBC America.

It's a funny old world, ain't it? Thanks to Supernatural, last year I met a totally charming chap called Dave (aka Dave Padacockles on Facebook). Dave is a classical cellist, and has his own string quartet, who play at weddings and suchlike - and Dave came all the way from Manchester, where he's based, to play at my Dad's funeral - for free - which was just so lovely of him, it still brings tears to my eyes.

So anyway, his Mum got re-married yesterday (coincidentally it turned out Dave's home town is where I live now), and his quartet had a recital this afternoon in a village hall just over the river from us. So of course I had to go - it was the least I could do after Dave's unsolicited kindness (a Jared photo op at A14 was a small token thank you!).

So we just had an afternoon of culture - Mozart, followed by Frank Bridge, tea and home made cake in the interval, then Schubert's quintet to finish. (And before you ask, yes, he'd brought along an additional cellist to make up the five!)

Anyhow, for anyone interested, here's my friend Dave's quartet playing the Londonderry Air. I admit, it brought a tear to my eye too.

tshirt exchange pic

Hey everyone! I was inspired to set up this tshirt exchange by a few messages I got at a Sam blog I run on tumblr from people who really wanted to get a shirt from Jared's campaign but couldn't afford it, for whatever reason. Since then, I've gotten over 150 messages from people telling me they can't afford a shirt and why it would mean so much for them to be able to get one, their reasons ranging from having an eating disorder to self-harming to having attempted suicide.

I've been able to match up about 40 people with generous donors, but that leaves over 100 people. I don't expect to match all of them up, but I'd love to be able to help out a few more people in the next 3 days before the campaign ends. If you're interested in buying a shirt for someone, please feel free to send me a PM here or send me a message on tumblr (send it 2x just to be safe). And if you can't give, I'd really appreciate people passing this message along on lj :)

Details about the exchange can be found here
And you can message me on tumblr about donating here

Also! By donating a shirt, you're entered to win an art piece of your choice up to $30 in value from the society6 shop of one of the following incredibly talented fanartists: zeddless, ellaine, & mydearhenry. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

p.s. I'm not too familiar with navigating lj when it's not fic-related, so sorry if I did anything wrong! And thank you to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] amberdreams for not only donating, but also pointing me in the direction of this comm.

Requiring some cudgelling of the old brain cells...so much so I started this post yesterday, then forgot to come back and finish it!! For milly_gal
What was your most memorable fandom moment in the last ten years?

For those of you who don't know me very well, I need to mention that I've always had a dodgy memory, but that in recent years it's got worse. So whatever I pick here, there were probably 100 better and more fun moments that I should be choosing instead but that have been swallowed by one of the holes in my Swiss cheese brain.

Moments I can recall (right now) would include

  • meeting a rather lovely German lady called Purple Nurple (aka Christine aka technicolour66 on tumblr/twitter aka loveinadooway) in a queue in Rome and becoming friends immediately - one of many lasting queue and convention friendships I've made to date, and one of the reasons fandom is so frigging ace. Friendships including dizzojay, katwoman76, sigrundora, xlittleangx and adrenalineshots to name but a few...

  • meeting Jared and Jensen for the first time in Chicago - that moment of holy FUCK! they are exceedingly, overwhelmingly attractive in person but even though I'm shaking and stuttering from nervousness, I'm still going to follow through with my plan to feel Jared's pecs and give Jensen's waist a quick squeeze to see if he's still got love handles. (He hadn't, he was deliciously trim)

  • last year's Christmas get together in London and finding I'd lucked out in the Secret Santa by landing two trays of the most tasty SPN themed gingerbread baked by our charming theymp. Looking forward to next Saturday, chaps and chappesses!

  • meeting up with my oldest SPN friends for the first time in Chicago. I'd got to know them on Facebook, and although the AMerican con idea was to see the Js, the main reason was to share the experience with these lovely peeps. So I attended the convention with two of them, and then we three met up with two more on the Monday and Tuesday after the convention

And that last event is the lead in to the moment I'm choosing (finally, I hear you cry!!) as my most memorable moment - because while we were sightseeing on Chicago's main drag (I forget the name of the road), taking touristy photos of this waterpump station now an art gallery, some inconsiderately tall bloke got in the way of my friend's photo. Yep, it was Jared, out shopping with Genevieve. So we stopped and had a really nice chat with them for a few minutes. They were both really charming and lovely. Of course one of the reasons I remember it so well is because I asked Jared if I could take a photo of them both and he said he'd rather not - so no pics of them and us dammit. Which doesn't rankle a bit, of course not ha ha ha!!

Geeze that ended up quite a ramble, didn't it? Sorry about that!
