I just realised I'd forgotten to pick this up again after the gap! So herewith a wee catchup on the questions.

27th Dec: For havenseptember6 If you could have SPN do a crossover episode with any other tv show, which show would you pick?
I think I'd have to go for Firefly - it would effectively kill two birds with one stone. Firstly it would mean our boys in space - complete with monsters and a spaceship version of the Impala. Plus it would bring Firefly back to the screens where it belongs - and would ensure some great writing for the Winchesters with Josh Whedon on board. Win win!

28th Dec: For emmatheslayer what is your new years eve plans ?
At the moment, on New Year's Day we are going round to see some friends and their kids to sample the dad and middle daughter's baking skills Apparently they are keen to show off, and we are more than happy to indulge! Apart from going to see the Hobbit in the afternoon, New Year's eve will no doubt be spent as usual, in bed at normal time and maybe waking up to listen to the boats on the river hooting their fog horns and fireworks going off. Honestly, I've never been very interested in the whole New Year thing.

29th Dec: For milly_gal What is the one thing you still want to do, desperately have your heart set on doing, fandom or rl or travel plans?
In fandom, one of my long held desires is hopefully coming to pass in May, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan being announced for Asylum 14 - still bouncing everytime I think about that one!
In RL I have wanted to go to Machu Pichu in Peru since I was eleven - I'm not sure when we will be able to fit it in, but I'm still hoping one day it will be possible. In less dream-like terms, I'm planning for us to go to Tokyo in 2020 for the Olympic Games. That one I am determined to make happen, and it feels more feasible too. We will both be getting a lump sum payment maturing that year, and what better way to spend it than a month in Japan? Taking in some amazing sport plus some amazing sights. Oh and it seems I did a post in advance to confuse myself - if you want to compare countries you've visited with my map -
here you go!

A day late (again) - this one's for sw0rdy What do you think Dean would love/hate most about the UK?

Dean would LOVE that we have two kinds of pie. He could have meat & potato pie for his main course followed by apple pie with lashings of custard for desert. Within a week he would have put on two stone and Sam would have to wheel him from pub to pub in order to sample steak & kidney pie followed by blackcurrant and apple, or pork pie followed by strawberry & gooseberry...
"Oh fuck, Sammy, I think I'm gonna burst!"
"For god's sake, Dean, I told you to go easy on that lamb, pea and mint pie."
"Yeah, I think the peas and mint tipped me over the edge..."

And Dean would hate that he'd have to leave his Baby behind - but I suppose that would be the same for anywhere outside the continental US so... Ok - he'd probably hate the fact that Sam would be geeking out all the time about the history. So much of it, everywhere you look - old buildings and old stuff. Probably full of old ghosts too, you know? just because it's old doesn't mean it's interesting, Sammy.

Oops, missed a day... So yesterday's question was for steeplechasers - how did you get into spn and what is the most important thing it's done for you?

The firsr part is hard because I can't actually remember why I suddenly decided to buy the box set seasons 1-3 and blitz-watch the whole lot. I remember seeing the adverts when SPN first aired in the UK (Supernatural just got sexy), and thinking, yup, those boys look handsome - but I don't like horror so that one's not for me. Then next thing I know, there I am, hooked.
The most important thing SPN has done for me is easy though. It's given me a new lease of life creatively, plus a whole bunch of new and awesome friends both online and in real life. What could be better than that?

11th Dec: For dizzojay - What has been your proudest moment?

I've been cudgelling my brain over this one since Dizz posted it and I'm no closer to an answer. There are a bunch of little things I've been proud of over the years but a single defining moment? Honestly, I don't know. Also, I'm a bit wary of feeling proud - in my experience, many of the things I've felt particularly proud of in the past have turned around and bitten me in the arse. Or slipped away while I wasn't looking.

Requiring some cudgelling of the old brain cells...so much so I started this post yesterday, then forgot to come back and finish it!! For milly_gal
What was your most memorable fandom moment in the last ten years?

For those of you who don't know me very well, I need to mention that I've always had a dodgy memory, but that in recent years it's got worse. So whatever I pick here, there were probably 100 better and more fun moments that I should be choosing instead but that have been swallowed by one of the holes in my Swiss cheese brain.

Moments I can recall (right now) would include

  • meeting a rather lovely German lady called Purple Nurple (aka Christine aka technicolour66 on tumblr/twitter aka loveinadooway) in a queue in Rome and becoming friends immediately - one of many lasting queue and convention friendships I've made to date, and one of the reasons fandom is so frigging ace. Friendships including dizzojay, katwoman76, sigrundora, xlittleangx and adrenalineshots to name but a few...

  • meeting Jared and Jensen for the first time in Chicago - that moment of holy FUCK! they are exceedingly, overwhelmingly attractive in person but even though I'm shaking and stuttering from nervousness, I'm still going to follow through with my plan to feel Jared's pecs and give Jensen's waist a quick squeeze to see if he's still got love handles. (He hadn't, he was deliciously trim)

  • last year's Christmas get together in London and finding I'd lucked out in the Secret Santa by landing two trays of the most tasty SPN themed gingerbread baked by our charming theymp. Looking forward to next Saturday, chaps and chappesses!

  • meeting up with my oldest SPN friends for the first time in Chicago. I'd got to know them on Facebook, and although the AMerican con idea was to see the Js, the main reason was to share the experience with these lovely peeps. So I attended the convention with two of them, and then we three met up with two more on the Monday and Tuesday after the convention

And that last event is the lead in to the moment I'm choosing (finally, I hear you cry!!) as my most memorable moment - because while we were sightseeing on Chicago's main drag (I forget the name of the road), taking touristy photos of this waterpump station now an art gallery, some inconsiderately tall bloke got in the way of my friend's photo. Yep, it was Jared, out shopping with Genevieve. So we stopped and had a really nice chat with them for a few minutes. They were both really charming and lovely. Of course one of the reasons I remember it so well is because I asked Jared if I could take a photo of them both and he said he'd rather not - so no pics of them and us dammit. Which doesn't rankle a bit, of course not ha ha ha!!

Geeze that ended up quite a ramble, didn't it? Sorry about that!

This has got to be the easiest question on the board, ladies and gents.
For wendy - How do you drink your coffee?
I don't! I never got into drinking tea because my parents only drank coffee, and I never acquired a taste for the bitter bean. I do occasionally have a hot chocolate, but only rarely. I drink because I'm thirsty, and hot drinks always make me thirsty instead of quenching it. So there you have it, I'm a beverage-weirdo.

This one is for alexisjane who asked - What is your most and least favorite things to draw, and what one piece of art (fannish or not) do you really wish you could have done yourself? AJ - this was HARD!!!!!

Oh lord, this is a fun one. For yohkobennington - Talk to me about notions people have about the British that are true and not true.

Actually this phrasing hits the nail on the head, because most of the things that are true are also not true... and obviously, the notions I will discuss here are my notions about other people's notions, so may not tally with your own, so bear with me. I've just picked ten things at random, feel free to ask me about any notions you may have that I don't cover here!

septembers_coda Wanted to know who was my favorite child character ever, in any fandom?

Supernatural is my first real "fandom", so I'll have to talk books instead, especially as the tv shows I've been in love with before SPN didn't really have any children in that I can think of (Babylon 5, Firefly, Stargate Atlantis, Alias Smith and Jones, Star Trek...oh, unless you count Wesley, but though I liked him he wasn't a fave character).

I've been wracking my brain for child characters and when I started putting this post together I still wasn't sure who would end up top of my list.

I'd have said Arya Stark straight off, except I am still too dischuffed about what dear George has done to her in the last couple of books - I barely recognised the feisty little girl who charmed the socks off me in Book 1, so I couldn't bring myself to put her top of my list. Lyra Belaqua is a great character, but I didn't really like her all that much, even while I understood her very well. So I looked a bit farther back and remembered one of my childhood heroes, Harry Wharton, from Frank Richards' Magnet comics. I imagine most of you will never have heard of him or the comics, though you might have heard of Billy Bunter. The Magnet was a weekly comic (narrative-based not cartoons) that ran from the early 1900s to around the 1940s, with stories about Greyfriars public school. I had a real thing about reading those. The bulk of the stories featured the Remove Form, who were about 14-15 year olds. Frank was an orphan, one of those upright, noble chaps with a fiery temper who always tried to do the right thing. There was also a bad boy character in that series who I had a soft spot for, Herbert Vernon Smith, also known as The Bounder. He was the rebel with a good heart, he smoked and gambled and often saved the day in spite of himself. I used to write fanfiction about these characters without knowing that was what it was!

But then I thought some more, and if I stretch the definition of a child character to teenagers, I think I can go for Lord Alexand DeKoven Woolf (with a side order of Rich, his little brother) from M K Wren's The Phoenix Legacy. At the start of the books Alexand is about 16 or17, while his brother is 12-14. Alexand has so many of the qualities I love in a hero - he's fiercely loyal, he's intelligent and thoughtful, he loves hard and strong with everything he's got, he has utter trust in his brother, he's flawed and makes mistakes, he's willing to sacrifice his life and happiness for the greater good.

Yup, I do have a pattern in the characters I fall in love with...

There’s nothing like starting a meme with a really knotty problem question, hey? chomaisky wanted to know where I think Sam and Dean’s relationship will go next.

So.

Keeping my feet on the ground, I’ll go with Canon speculation.

Based on what they’ve given us so far this season, the brothers’ relationship seems to be in a relatively good place for a change. Sam is keeping a watchful eye on Dean but otherwise seems to be completely unfazed by the fact that Demon!Dean tried to ventilate his skull with a claw hammer. Dean is treating Sam like his little brother of old, but with undertones of fatalism which is worrisome. But where would we be without worrying about one or the other Winchester. Or both?

So where do they go from here in terms of relationship (and not in terms of plot)?

I know what I want to see. What I’d like is Sam taking charge. I feel Sam has been largely absent for too long, and even a die-hard Dean!Girl like me misses him. I want Sam being clever, authoritative, assertive. I want him to matter, to be more than an accessory that gets thrown around each week and that Dean has to fret about.  Sam should be his own person again, and have his own story, and that story can focus on Dean if they want. That’s fine by me.

I want him to save Dean, not only from the Mark and whatever its consequences might be, but from the pit of despair that boy is liable to plunge into if left to his own self-depreciating devices. I want them to end the season with the Winchesters in a good place with each other; able to say they love each other and that it’s fucked up, but right for them. They are actually not far away from this at the moment – Dean as good as told Sam that he knows Sam loves him, when he was telling Cole how much he understood Cole’s plight.

So I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a few more Impala scenes where they talk to each other about that is going on and not just the next case. It doesn’t have to be pages of dialogue, that wouldn’t feel right as these boys just don’t behave that way, but having them sharing a few beers, getting the green cooler out and maybe sitting on the bonnet watching the stars, that isn’t beyond the stretch of imagination. Oh, and definitely more teasing broments. I could live with a lot more of those humorous moments that characterised earlier seasons.  Preferably not written by those asinine nine year old boy writers who always seem to turn all the characters into utter pricks, especially Dean.

This season the show is giving us hope that we might see their relationship settle down like this, I think. There is a feeling of maturity about them now - which is a bloody good thing, given that they are getting on a bit and should be more settled in themselves by now!

What do you think?

Pick a date in December and give me something to talk about. Give me a question or topic to woffle on about. Anything goes, either SPNish or real life (if you pick something I don't want to talk about, I'll tell you and you can pick something else). Whatever comes to mind!
