Well that was a bad fan week - I lost my draft fic for spn_cinema somehow, no idea how, but I must have deleted it before I did my backups. DOH. So I missed the draft submission deadline for that one, while I also had to admit I'm not going to get my Dean Winchester Big Bang fic done either. So I've pulled out of two challenges in the same week. I hate doing that once, let alone twice.

On the up side, I'm happy to report that my hare raised £3400 for Break kids charity in Norwich, and even better, my giraffe went for £7000 (my personal record so far!) in the auction in Worcester. Wish me luck for the other two auctions this week - the bees are on Wednesday and the car bonnet on Saturday. I should tot up what my sculpture paintings have raised so far over the last couple of years and add it to my resume!

I was sorting out a drawer of stuff yesterday and found this memoire written by my Dad for an event in Shrewsbury a few years ago, collecting people's experiences of WWII. I've got Mum's reminiscences too, so I'm going to type those up next. I'm putting them here mainly for me, though some might find them interesting. :D

Michelle died this morning at 4am. Her ex husband was with her.

Thanks everyone for your kind words yesterday. Michelle and I lost touch for many years but when she moved down here to care for our ungrateful uncle, we got to know each other again. Without all the baggage and insecurity of childhood, she was like a sister to me.

I'm ok - just very sad.

Had a nice few days up in Shrewsbury visiting Mum with Paul - though Paul wasn't happy as he has possible shin splints and couldn't run. Because of the shin splints, Paul was trying to keep weight off his leg as much as possible, so he didn't come with me and Mum when we had a day out in Church Stretton in the (very shallow) snow. We managed to pick the right day for this, it was virtually the only day that week where it didn't rain!

I took some pics with my iPad when I was in Liverpool the last couple of visits, plus a couple in Shrewsbury.
This was the lovely tree in Liverpool One. Mum got some better photos with her camera but this one gives an impression of it's prettiness.pics under the cut )

Haven't been around much recently - real life, huh? This was all good things though (apart from me dragging a bed onto Paul's toes and crushing them, that is). So here's everything in bite-sized chunks.

Mum's garden is looking glorious, and her vegetables are growing well. So well that she is affronted at their abundance. She came to me with two fistsful of broad beans and a look on her face that rivalled Sam Winchester for bitch-faced exasperation. "Look at this, MORE beans! Isn't it ridiculous?" Her face said. I restrained my reply of - you planted the little green feckers, you must have expected this! and just agreed when she said she'd maybe take some when we go see my aunties tomorrow. She already got rid of four bags full of beans yesterday, leaving them on the driveway with a please help yourself notice.

Myself, I'm affronted that she's already given away bags full of gooseberries instead of saving them for me! LOL

Home is where the heart was

SPN100 Drabble Challenge: word count 100
Challenge word: strip
Warnings: angst
Summary: Because it’s Father’s Day here in the UK, here’s John and his boys.
***********

John doesn’t think about having a home after Mary dies. It’s a long time before the smell of burning stops following John around, and it never leaves his dreams. It isn’t until John’s confronted with his boys’ warped concept of home that he realises the emptiness he carries round has consequences.

“What’s the matter, Dad? Don’t you like it?”

John looks at Sam’s quivering bottom lip, at Dean’s anxious eyes, then stares down at the card they’ve made him for Father’s Day.

Dean’s drawn the Impala and Sam’s drawn a white picket fence around it.

John’s heart is stripped bare.

My cousin's new wife has collated all the wedding pics from their marriage celebration a couple of weekends ago, and although I'm dischuffed about how bloody WIDE I am (I really do need to lose a couple of stones) - suddenly I feel quite tall. I mean, what a bunch of short-arses my family is. Ha ha ha!!!

In case you hadn't seen me before, I'm the dork on the end holding a wedding-inappropriate canvas bag with a picture of Castiel on its reverse. At least I remembered to turn it around for the photo...!

So apparently it's a day for posting something random to celebrate the existence of LJ - which I'm totally on board with celebrating because I practically live here these days. So here's a wave to all my lovely flist - thanks for being my friends on here, I do appreciate that so many of you bother to read and look at my posts, and for all the connections I've made on here and online generally. Y'all rock, my dears, you all enhance my life enormously.

And as an aside, here's what i've been doing the last couple of days - meeting up with online and non-online friends and family and having a lovely time.

This is two friends from the Chicago area, visiting the Black Country museum with another friend who we 'met' via Facebook, plus my parents. My Mum has been chatting with one of the Americans and the Black Country boy online and this was their first meeting face to face. I'm taking the photo. Isn't the internet wonderful?

Edited to say HAPPY INTERNATIONAL HAPPINESS DAY everyone! LOL
Day 10 already and I'm glad to say I haven't run out of happy-making things yet! Which is in itself a reason to be cheerful, is it not?
So today's photo of a happy moment is lunch with my cinema-buddy Christine and my cousin Michelle. I love that being self employed means I can be a Lady Wot Lunches!

The bonus here was that me telling them I needed this photo for my happy album made them happy too - it's a win win!

The nice thing about this exercise is that I'm finding that I'm looking for the things that make me smile in the day (and there are a lot of things that fit the bill) instead of noticing all the stuff that irritates me.

Back to Part One

Sam was trying very hard not to panic.  But Dean had been unconscious for two days now, not stirring a muscle since Sam had found him collapsed outside one of the Bunker’s many small storerooms.  Weirdly, Dean’s boots and socks had been missing, nowhere to be found – something Dean was going to be mighty pissed about when he woke.  He loved those boots.

Title: Legacy
Author:
amber1960
Recipient: counteragent
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Spoilers up to the latter half of Season 8, though nothing major. Use of the f word.

Author's Notes: This hopefully covers counteragent’s requests for a fic expanding on the Men of Letters [and the Campbell] legacies, plus Dean with a family member (not Sam).  Though Sam does appear here too, and maybe gets a little tiny fix it towards the end. I dunno.
Beta:
monicawoe - who imposed discipline on my excessive wordiness, caught some glaring Brit-speak and generally improved this thing immeasurably! Any and all remaining errors are mine own.

Summary: Time travel really is a bitch.  When Dean accidentally stumbles through a time portal inside the Bat Cave, he discovers some new information about the Men of Letters legacy.

Surviving!

My Dad is hellbent on testing his bounce-factor before he reaches his 80th birthday at the end of the month.  It would appear that diving head first down stairs impairs bouncability somewhat, and whacking your face against a door jamb at the bottom of said stairs is failry traumatic on said face.

So now he's in hospital with a broken neck!!! - he can sit up and walk with a bit of help, is talking and complaining of boredom and the excessive heating systems in hosptial wards, while my Mum is telling him it serves him right for wandering round the house in his outdoor shoes with the laces undone, and refusing to pay attention to where he's putting his feet when descending stairs...

No idea where this leaves our Christmas plans though.  Mum had a few nights booked in Norwich before coming down to ours for Christmas itself but I really can't see him being able to travel... I mean - broken neck, folks.  Even if it's just cracked vertebrae, it's got to slow him down a bit.  We'll hopefully find out more tomorrow when there are more people around in the hospital - weekend staffing is useless.

If you are squeamish turn away now because here he is in all his glory.

My Mum just popped onto Facebook chat long enough to send me two photos of my Dad looking like this:
Photobucket

With no explanation!  What the hell has he done to himself?  He's been falling over a lot lately - at nearly 80 he's getting a little unsteady on his feet; but he's still playing (field) hockey and umpiring, so he could have got injured on Saturday.  Though it also looks like a cartoon of someone with tooth ache.  Hey ho.

Ha ha update from me mam - it's an infected tooth and he's on antibiotics that have already started to reduce the swelling.  Poor old boy.
