Mum's garden is looking glorious, and her vegetables are growing well. So well that she is affronted at their abundance. She came to me with two fistsful of broad beans and a look on her face that rivalled Sam Winchester for bitch-faced exasperation. "Look at this, MORE beans! Isn't it ridiculous?" Her face said. I restrained my reply of - you planted the little green feckers, you must have expected this! and just agreed when she said she'd maybe take some when we go see my aunties tomorrow. She already got rid of four bags full of beans yesterday, leaving them on the driveway with a please help yourself notice.

Myself, I'm affronted that she's already given away bags full of gooseberries instead of saving them for me! LOL

My mum is doing the same with her garden; her potatoes and lettuce leaves always do well, as do her beans. I'm not a fan of broad beans, and I can't remember the last time I ate gooseberries (but I don't think it was a fond memory!!!)

"You planted the little feckers..." Too funny. But sharing from the garden, that's wonderful. (The old joke around where I grew up was: "If you have to buy zucchini, you don't have any friends." Heehee.)

That's a great saying! But of course we'd call them courgettes :)

I'm not a fan of broad beans either but she does also have french beans and peas which I love. And stewed gooseberries are awesome! :D

My Mum usually has the same problem. Last year she had so much asparagus that I came to preface each conversation about a visit with "don't bring any asparagus". One year, the sunflowers grew so plentifully and tall that they'd reach a critical height and then the stalks would snap unexpectedly (usually when my father was out in the patch picking something - the sudden screams from the veg garden were commonplace). She ended up calling them "sunflowers of death". This year we've been in a drought and it's been very hot so not everything did so well. Still she'll have enough of most things to see her through the winter.

Ha ha ha I love the sunflowers of death!
My mum's complaining her freezer is already full, but I'm sure I can eat some of the surplus for her - oh the sacrifices we make for family...

Honestly, the Sunflowers of Death were a source of constant amusement for me that summer. Dad's jumpy to begin with so being attacked by random plants produced such hysterics that sometimes I could barely breathe from laughing XD

That's just as well, given that she needs to take care of your piggies and Teacup!

Gardening is weird in that one year you get all the beans and the next year, it's cucumbers or summer squash. It's great if you can put some of it up for winter but there's only so many pickles a family can eat in a year. Unfortunately, my pumpkin plant is behaving like a slash fanfic in that there are no female flowers to be found and adoption and mpreg don't seem to be an option for pumpkins. Not for lack of bees though so that has been good to see. Meanwhile, the tomatoes have been having a very prolific orgy. I don't even know.

This year Mum's definitely had a good crop of beans, and early plums, and gooseberries, I'm not sure what else. She's down there now, been out of sight for ages and now I'm wondering whether I should check on her! Which is daft because when I'm not here...

I'm bummed that I couldn't help my parents to clear out their gooseberry bushes this year (read: live on gooseberries alone for a few weekends). So much goodness missed. *dramatically despairs*

Thank you so much, bb!! ♥♥

Your Mum obviously has green fingers ... (As well as green beans!)

That story reminded me of my friend Andy, who, while he was the owner of a bookstore, complained that people were buying too many of the books he had on display, forcing him to replenish those displays too often.

As you can imagine, he did not keep that store for very long.

Ha ha ha that would be me if I owned a bookstore - except I'd be wanting to keep all the books just because I wanted to keep all the books, not because of window displays....

I wish I lived in an area that lent itself to gardening. ALso, that I wasn't much too lazy to garden. There is nothing as good as truly fresh food!

I suppose our gardener friends would tell us there's no such thing as an area that doesn't lend itself to gardening pursuits - my back garden begs to differ! LOL

I can't imagine what it would take to water things enough here to make them grow...more than it costs to buy at a grocery store FOR SURE!

Oh yum, fresh home-grown fruit and veggies are the best! I'm not keen on gooseberries but I'd relieve her of some runner beans! :)

*grins* Steve does the same, every single year!! Although he does it with runners, lol!
