Challenge #52 - Body diversity

For this month's Drawesome challenge to explore unconventional body shapes and sizes in art. No instagram ready glam here.

I'd been wondering what to draw, then I thought about all the wonderful and various models we've had for our life drawing, so here are a few of my sketches.


Kaz
Kaz is in her forties, a belly dancer and cyclist

A bunch of folk festival people

Brenda
I think in her fifties, early 60s, an excellent sitter

Lady Contrary (Burlesque, you can check her out on Instagram. This was her first time life modelling.)

Gerald
Ex army, very upright and still when modelling. Early 70s.






I've left out the models who were more conventional shapes, but we used to have such a great variety of people, I really miss those sessions!

Oh, lovely drawings, I especially like the delicate colours in the one of Brenda.

Thank you! Brenda's was done with a single pencil that has red, yellow and blue variegated lead. It's really fun to use for life drawing! (I use a Koh-i-noor clutch with what they call magic pencil 5.6mm leads)

I love the variety here. The effect of the magic pencil is very cool (thanks for the reminder, I also own one). Love the contrast in textures for Lady Contrary.

These are all so awesome. And everything feels very natural and fluid.

(I miss taking classes. Even those classes where I got frustrated by the teacher or my own ability, I still always got so much more art completed when I had a regular routine. And there's just something about the atmosphere about being a room of artists because sometimes you're learning as much from other students as the teacher. "Wait, how did you do that? That's so cool!")

Sadly these sessions were untutored, I’ve never had any taught life drawing classes. I’ve done some art classes since school for other arty things though and they have been really fun!

I took an "Anatomy for Artists" class that was really neat. So the focus was much more on trying to get all the basic landmarks in the right place, rather than the gesture/shading, which I also need a lot of help with.
