Snagged from sw0rdy

Put your music player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs.
Post the poem that results.
The first line of the twenty-first song is the title.

This is my word

Another stop sign, another headlight
I’m staring at tears on the pages.
Drowning in you, asking nothing, aching,
If I said I was sorry would you forget the things I’ve done?

No, you don't have to wear your best fake smile
The branches have traded their leaves for white sleeves
I’ve waited a hundred years
I’ve been left out alone like a damn criminal.

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Oh quiet down, I've had enough
Drifting apart, getting harder to hold you
I’ll take you with me over the water,

Killed by drones
Oh I think I landed in a world I hadn’t seen.

If you're not the one for me,
Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand.
I've got a really bad disease
Put your coat on, this city trembles.

I will leave my heart at the door
Sleepless nights and endless days.

Had a bit of a different day today, with a small team of volunteers helping a local archaeologist survey one of the many World War II airfields nearby. It was me plus a bunch of middle aged/elderly airfield geeks, but there was at least one other woman, which made me feel a little less out of place. I didn't like to say I knew next to nothing about the place, I was just there because I did some archaeological surveying when I was at uni and thought this might be fun. Two of the blokes had driven all the way up from Southend, and were pretty typical Essex boys. The others were Suffolk chaps and much quieter. They all got very excited because Martin the Archaeologist told us we were going to be surveying the Bomb Stores, which are normally closed to the public, and not the remaining buildings on the airfield itself, many of which are now being used by car maintenance workshops and the like.

Just to say - here in the UK Valentine's Day is for lovers, not for general love-ins with any old body. Which isn't to say I don't love y'all, of course I do! But perverted as I might be in many other ways, I have no desire to get romantic with any of you! Ha ha ha!
However - THANK YOU to anon who sent me a virtual hug! Most kind.
But here's what the hubster got me, because he is a closet romantic.Read more... )

Had a nice sunny day early on, so we had to have a wander in the park to see if we could spot the kingfisher again. Sadly, she didn't show up, but we spotted two goosanders, and lots of the darling little mandarin ducks. Oh and Paul saw a big fat rat.

A short bird picspam follows!

Just to thank everyone for the well wishes - all that positive thinking may have worked, as we have managed to find a care home really quickly, plus it's only ten minutes walk away from the town centre, which means both Paul and his brother can get there really easily for visiting. The manager seems to have all the right ideas about making the place a home for the residents while still providing the right level of nursing care for those that need it, rather than the clinic approach some places have where the place feels more like a hospital than somewhere to live. The room is small but the view from the window was nice - it overlooks the garden which has a hill with a zigzag path, a rowing boat and a brightly painted beach hut which sounds a bit weird but it makes something interesting to look at. Plus there are bird feeders out there too so there should be thnigs to look at.

It's probably as good a solution as we were going to find, so when the hospital chuck MIL out, she now has somewhere to go that can cater for someone with virtually no mobility and who can't speak. I'm really looking forward to settling her into a routine so Paul can start to unwind a bit - he's so tense at the moment and so tired all the time he's almost as short tempered as me!

Anyway, thanks everyone!

4th May 1977 I went to Bingley Hall, Stafford to see the Eagles on their Hotel California tour. I don't think my soon to be 17 year old self was that well equipped to enjoy the concert, as reading my diary entry about it this morning made me guffaw. I didn't even write it up straight away!

Here's the entry for a laugh:

I don't know if any of you remember me talking about the editing/rewriting work I was doing for the bloke who decorated the outside of our house? Long story short, he told me he had some children's books written and wanted me to edit them. The first one was about two fishcakes. Yeah.
Well anyway, I did that one, then I've done three more - some so awful I had to almost completely rewrite them for all sorts of reasons (horny pizzas, anyone?). They are all still pretty dreadful but at least the spelling is ok and they kind of flow. A bit.

Here's his promo for the fishcakes one!

Now seriously, would you buy something a) about fish cakes and b) with characters that look like THAT? Bearing in mind this is for preschoolers...

On Saturday we went to see the long awaited production of Hamlet starring the inestimable Mr Cumberbatch. Or as someone called him recently when complaining about them 'messing about with Shakespeare' - Benedict Cummerbund. Having bought the tickets over a year ago, it was always going to be a little anticlimactic, but on the whole, I reckoned it was a good production.

Today we had a day out to see the seal colony at Horsey Gap - they are an overspill from the very successful colony at Blakeney Point. But where at Blakeney you have to take a boat trip to see the seals, at Horsey, they just hang out on the beach and are happy to allow humans within a couple of yards/metres without getting agitated. It's wonderful.
So here's a seal picspam!Read more... )

Damn, I really wish I'd got off my fat lardy arse and gone to this one now...

Maybe next time.
Any Trekkies out there who went?

I admit, this is one series I would really like to watch - the cast is stellar and the trailers have been intriguing. BUt I really wish I'd been in London the day they filmed THIS!

Guess I'll be looking for download links tomorrow morning!

In case any of you were entertaining the idea of going to see this film because it has quite a good cast – Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, etc – don’t. Save your money and watch an old Pink Panther movie instead, it will be much more amusing, and Peter Sellers is a genuine comedy genius.

Seriously, this is now my contender for the most boring film of the year and anything else is going to have to try extremely hard to knock Mortdechai of this pedestal.

Spoilers ahoy….

Variously stolen from dear_tiger, ephermeralk and cassiopeia7. Go to the closest book to you. Turn to page 206. The first sentence explains your love life.

My love life came out (from 3 books closest to me) as:
"Her too?"
"I've not got any gypsy clothes," he said, "but p'raps they'd give me some."
I thought about my time up at Haworth when I was a small girl.

If anyone wants to interpret this explanation of my love life, feel free because I am clueless...!

The lines are from, respectively - Alan Garner's Boneland (which doesn't run to 206 pages so I went for the last even numbered page), Richmal Crompton's William The Fourth, and Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair.

So excited to be doing something different (even though I'm still drawing Jensen, kinda). So I was lucky enough to snaffle the multitalented dollarformyname's most excellent story, Past Today, written for the little known darkangel_bb. So now you know about it, you have to check it out, am I right? Story Master Post is HERE
DABB-Ben and Alec small
The story summary goes like this: Terminal City was abandoned after an attack five years ago, survivors scattered to fend for themselves. Alec's been on his own for a while now, trying to forget what he lost, but then Ben shows up to make him remember in all the wrong ways. After an armed robbery and a city-wide manhunt that results in high-speed chases, gunshot wounds, more dead transgenics, and a hostage situation or two, Alec tracks Ben down to thank him properly.

We had a day out at the zoo today - these were my faves - the rainbow lorikeets. So blooming cute and pretty, and you get to walk through their steamy enclosure and feed them nectar if you want. Of course, you have to wait until your glasses de-mist before you can do anything, on a day as chilly as today!

Because I didn't get given a question to answer today I'm posing one of my own - HOW did I miss this little gem a year ago???

It's fecking genius.
