Stolen from the lovely fannishliss

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2017?
American Gods – couldn’t get to grips with it at all, in spite of really liking Ian McShane from way back (Loveday, anyone?) and the guy who played Shadow, who was mighty fine eye candy as well as a reasonable actor. Mr Robot – just couldn’t like it, however much I tried.  The Tick – again, being a Ben Edlund creation, I wanted to like it, but it bored me.

Last night just before going to bed, three men drove a white van into a bunch of people on London Bridge, then jumped out of the van and started stabbing people who were enjoying a night out at restaurants and bars on the South Bank. So far there are six people dead and many badly injured.

Listening, or rather inactively listening to the radio at 6am while falling back to sleep does give rise to some interesting and weird dreams! Mine started off with an inspection of the crater caused by the US MOAB, but it was somewhere most definitely not Afghanistan, seeing as how it had lush green vegetation and black tufa rocks. So from that, I'd say it was one of the Azorean Islands I had in mind. That and Clarence's jungle! Our horrified inspection was brief and not very traumatic because we then wandered into a small town and were greeted by the cutest little fat puppy ever. He was a solid pointy faced little feller with a pointy whirly-gig tail, though, strangely, I noted that his otherwise normal tan fur had a kind of oily, petrol-like, multicoloured sheen.

We moved on and went inside a complex of wooden buildings that were a cross between a conference hotel and a craft shopping centre. For some reason, we were then looking at a buffet of home-made food, and Angela had brought some stuff that looked like cake but turned out to be some kind of open sandwich with beetroot and a cheese I'd never heard of. Very tasty! Then that morphed into clearing up plates and other catering debris from different rooms, while gazing through the windows at a swell of glassy water that threatened to overwhelm the building. It was beautiful - all turquoise and gleaming in the sun - but also terrifying! Luckily, I was distracted by a souvenir shop, and another adorable pupster who wasn't furry at all because he was actually knitted!

Then I woke up to hear the radio had been talking about taking dogs to work, as well as the bomb and sport and the like. So that's where all the puppies came from. Hey ho, brain.

Finally got to see the film so I can read other people's reactions now!

What did I think of it? Well, the time went quickly, I enjoyed it while I was watching but it left me empty. I have no desire to go and see it again, and no real sense of engagement with it.

My main problem was that it totally failed to give me anything new.

Goddamit!

I fell asleep this afternoon and have woken up seeing double out of my good eye. It's bloody annoying. And kind of disturbing me that I've been awake for an hour and it hasn't gone away - in spite of me blinking away like an idiot. Putting my glasses on doesn't help either. Plus yesterday my knee was hurting and it just got worse overnight so I've been sat around icing it and dosing myself with Ibruprofen. Not a good day, folks. Maybe I'll just switch on the telly and wallow in some High Chaparral - or Sharpe - before Paul comes home and wants to watch the Calcutta Cup.

So now the double vision thing has cleared up and the ibuprofen has numbed the knee so all's good.

We've done a lot of walking since Monday! It's been very pleasant to be able take our time over things though. We've been here so often that there's no longer any rush to cram in this site or that, because we've seen mostly everything we ever craved to see at least once or twice before. That didn't mean we couldn't find some new and interesting things to fill our time with this visit though - in between the pizza rustica and gelato, of course.

So here's a few of my personal highlights from this time round.

Flipping zara_zee gave me the letter K - which ain't very loving at all! LOL And ephermeralk gave me G, so I'm doing both at once to confuse everyone.

Something I hate:
K = Karl Adolf Eichmann, Kale (and most things cabbage related, like sprouts...), kippers (pooh! the smell alone!)
G = believe it or not - excessive gore, men who grope, griping

Something I love:
K = The idea of kinaesthesia, kindness, Kahlil Gibran, King Arthur, kaleidoscopes, the saying 'kit and caboodle', kiwi fruit
G = the colour green, SPN's version of Gabriel, Gandalf, gretazreta's fics

Somewhere I've been:
K = Kent, Kelowna, Kendal, Kirby, Knightsbridge, Kesgrave, Keswick, West Kennett, Kings Cross, Knotty Ash, Kilarney...
G = Germany, Greece, Gateshead, Galgate, Garston, Galaway, Glastonbury... I've been through Gobowen too.

Somewhere I'd like to go:
K = Kimbolton, Kenilworth, County Kerry, Knock (both of them!)
G = Greenland, Gamble's Green (because - SPN connection of course!), Gibraltar, Gelsenkirchen (because it has to be said with a Scouse accent)

Someone I know:
K = kalliel, katwoman76, keep_waking_up...
G = gaelicspirit, galwithglasses, geckoholic...

A film I liked:
K = King of Hearts, Kingdom of Heaven, Kingsman, Kinky Boots
G = Galaxy Quest, Gallipoli (oh my heart...), The Graduate, Gone with the Wind

If you want a letter, just ask!

Argh!!!!!

Okay okay. I'm calm. Really. I just started watching Constantine because I thought it might be fun. I watched the first episode and it wasn't totally terrible. The story was ok, the characters vaguely interesting. BUT I was struggling with John Constantine's accent. What was it supposed to be? Irish? British? A tiny bit Scouse at times? I dunno. I looked up the actor - he's Welsh. So perhaps a touch of Taffy in there.

I start watching Episode 2 - set in a Welsh mining town in Pennsylvania (stretching my credulity already here, but okay, if you can have a Welsh-speaking enclave in Patagonia, then why not in the USA?). Bar scene, Constantine talking to a local yokel. Says he was born and brought up in Liverpool. OMG!!!! He IS supposed to be a Scouser. Fuck me sideways, but that has to be one of the worst Scouse accents EVER. Even I could do better than that.

I will try and carry on watching but I don't know if I can get past this. First Patrick the Irish witch, then Crowley's supposed Scottish son and Rowena the Scottish witch in SPN - what is it with US TV that won't allow these poor actors to use their own PROPER accents????

Breathes deeply. I'm fine.

Had a lovely day out with my cousin on her birthday on Wednesday and unbeknownst to us her new fella was vidding us being big kids on the swings we found in this tiny Suffolk village...
Two 52 year olds thoroughly testing the playground equipment to the limits of its stress tolerances!

Norman window on the left, wall paintings just about visible. I didn't go too crazy inside the church as there are already some excellent photos on Flickr by an Ipswich guy called Simon K.
Photobucket
And the 14th C retable with what looks like a fairly ancient chair (I reckon 16th-17th C).
Photobucket
The saint on the left is supposed to be King Edmund. He's Suffolk's saint, martyred by the Danes supposedly in my ex work colleague's back garden in Hoxne. As my hubby pointed out, he does look rather camp!

As an aside, why do I have a tag for penis songs?????

So, haka or not to haka?

Personally I love all that thigh slapping but I don't see why the opposition team shouldn't retaliate according their own culture - so I have to agree that the French shouldn't have advanced on the NZ team; nope, instead they should have got out their packs of Gauloise, done some Gallic shrugging and maybe farted in the general direction of the Kiwis.

I wonder what the England team should do – probably just look uncomfortable with such a public display of emotion.  Maybe do some synchronised sipping at a cup of tea, while raising disapproving eyebrows.

www.ch131.com is finally back in business so I have finally caught up on White Collar.  I've seen some adverse comments about the fact that Neal is deceiving Peter, but although I love their relationship I think it would be far too simplistic and boring if they just became friends and Neal turned honest.  The tension and bite in the show is about the tug between a real genuine respect and friendship on the one hand, and the pull of their respective callings - Peter on the side of the law and justice, Neal deep in his scams and cons - on the other.  Without that, this would be a really light fluffy affair without any meaning or punch.  And I LOVE Mozzy!

Next I need to get on with watching Justified and Castle....

But tonight we are off to our local park once again (third day on a row) this time to see an open air big screening of Madame Butterfly.  I love my park!  Not only does it double as our back garden, but we get free music and events all year round.  How cool is that?
