Drawesome challenge #51 - Fantasy BIPOC character

Drawesome is a friendly, multifandom art community, and sets a monthly challenge. I haven't actually managed to do a fill for an age, but am just scraping in at the end of this one. 😂

Here's a charcoal drawing of an African dryad.



For those who like to know - it's on a roughish 100% cotton rag paper which I wouldn't use again for this media, it didn't work that well. I used ordinary charcoal, a blending stump (and my hand!) and a kneaded eraser.
Inspiration - mainly Adam Riches scribbly art style

This is so well executed! The scribble-like style works wonderfully for the tree bark texture, and you've captured his facial features beautifully with charcoal. :D

Thank you! He ended up more dark and broody than I'd originally envisaged, but I liked it better darker.

It's so wonderfully expressive, like the dryad is just about to step out of the tree.

Did you spray it with fixative or something similar after?

I haven't actually sprayed it yet, but I will do. It's way too messy to just leave it without any fixative. 😁

This is SO COOL! ♡ Kind of at an 'optical illusion' level, the way it's fully a tree AND fully a person, depending on which area of the drawing you focus on. ♡♡♡ The way you made his features SO tree-like is amazing!
