Blood will Flow

I got some Gamblin oil paints for my birthday, so I spent some time on the day having a play around with them. I'm not entirely sure what I think of them yet but they are easier to use than I'd used to think - the brushes do seem to get reasonably clean just using linseed oil, so not having to bother with turps or white spirit is a big plus for me.

So on my birthday I tried Jensen on some naff watercolour paper I wasn't too bothered about. I put a layer of non absorbent acrylic gesso on it first - burnt sienna, which is a gorgeous colour, but then got covered up when I started painting. 😂

I know the drawing isn't right but I'm not going to come back to it, it's just a practice piece after all.( Read more... )

Ages ago there was a meme on tumblr (or somewhere) to take an old drawing/painting and try doing it again to see what differences there are, if any, in your style, competency, etc. I'd been meaning to have a go at this challenge for ages, then for some reason this old drawing from 2012 got my attention, so...Remix time!

Here's the old pencil drawing which is fiddled with in photoshop or GIMP, because I remember the eyes were in the wrong place. I know I added white highlights too, and some digital shading.( Read more... )

Ok you are going to think I'm extra nuts now, but I'm stupidly excited because I found this thing in Photoshop I never knew existed and it's ALMOST like the blender brush in PaintTool Sai. Those of you who know PS inside out are going to think I'm ridiculous not to have found this before but wheeeee! I painted this and it turned into youn Sammy, and he decided to wear eyeliner, while enjoyed pushing the colours around his face. Ok the hair isn't wonderful (or very hair-like but it was the rest I was more interested in).

It's not high res because I was on a small file when I started playing then cropped it some more. But I'm going to play with this mixer brush some more now. Squeee!

I've NEVER done anything like this before!! Well, I've written pomes, of course, but I've never read them and I'd certainly be too effing nervous to stand up and recite in front of people so I wasn't sure what this would come out like.

The Bunker
There’s a rhythm in my life, a pulse that beats even though I have no heart, no veins, no blood.
I was alone for a long time, I counted the beats
I counted the stars above me
I counted time passing through my many doors.

I have doors between worlds, I hold worlds inside and outside of me
Keeping worlds in, keeping worlds out.
I hold fast, I hold them shut
I keep this world safe.
I open them when needed, let air in, let air out
I breathe, sometimes.

There's a new comm spnspiration which is all about experimenting, and one of the posts talked about white space - so I thought I'd try something. Which wasn't really working, and I ended up with this instead.
