There has been some controversy about this one, but I'm recommending it without hesitation because it's brilliant.
The Persistence of Memory by blackrabbit42 is so much more than a love story, and even more than a fascinating concept (though it is both of those too). It's thought provoking, it's insightful. It provides a beautifully sympathetic look inside the head of a talented autistic young man, and inside the head of another young man with an affliction that is strange and terrible in its consequences.

It's not light and fluffy, but it it is gorgeous. It will pull you in and not let go.

And the art is beautiful too.

I'm very slowly catching up on my reading and have to point y'all to this poignant ficlet written for me by twisted_slinky. It was for spnspiration's April Fool's challenge, and I'm ony sorry I have taken so long to get round to finding it and reading it, because it's just lovely.

Title: Go Fly a Kite, Sam Winchester
Author: twisted_slinky
Summary: Kevin has happy memories. That's not the problem. 1st Person POV.
Prompt: Sam & Kevin, "fly that kite, boys"

If you read nothing else today, read this. fleshflutter wrote In the Mouth of Winter for me and it's wonderful. Even if you don't normally read Avengers/Thor/Loki fics, read this, you won't be disappointed. Summary: After Loki inadvertently makes Thor the vessel of his magic, Thor gets very ill, so Loki has to make sure he doesn’t die before Loki’s got his magic back.
It's 7K words of awesomeness. It's Gen-fic, but the kind where you can read into it what you wish.
Click on Loki to go to AO3 to read.

I was going to rec this on  rocksalt_recs but it seems I'm a day too early for the open reccers' slots

Title: The Amazing Incredible Adventures of Freakboy and Dykegirl
Writer: stele3
Status of work: incomplete
Characters and/or pairings: Dean, OFC
Rating: Mature
Warnings, kinks & contents: Abandoned Work - Unfinished and Discontinued, ponies, Magic, Dinosaurs, Femslash, lesbians
Length: 89176
Summary: Future-fic, AU in that Papa Winchester is still alive (or alive again, whatever). Told from the POV of Kim Watson, a bounty hunter who encounters a solo Dean; the two form an unlikely partnership.

Reccer's notes: If you are like me and a bit wary of first person fics, put that aside and give this fic a go.  Even though the author says it is incomplete, the place that it finishes could be an ending, and won't leave you disatisfied.  It might however, leave you craving more, because it is just so well written and so much fun, dammit!

In this AU, Sam and Dean are estranged (something that feels like an echo their relationship in What is and Should Never Be).  Dean is struggling on with his hunting life in spite of the gaping hole in this heart, and the narrator, Kim, who is a fully fleshed out and awesomely snarky character in her own right, does her best to help him heal a little bit.  The developing relationship between her and Dean is the core of the story, as is the way these two damaged individuals find a friendship that sees them both through some tough times.  So there is angst aplenty (many's the time her Dean brings a tear to my eye) but this is leavened by a healthy dose of humour.
