My oldest fandom friend and star beta [livejournal.com profile] harrigan, has written and posted a perfectly wonderful AUJ2 Winter Olympics speed skting fic, which you need to check out here! It's short but oh so sweet, and is told in a wonderfully thrilling format, and is full of spills and thrills. So please check it out and shower her with love!

Also, if you're watching the winter Olympics, have you been imagining your own AUJ2 fics and art?! Maybe J2 are in a team sport like curling, ice hockey, ice-skating or even the double luge? Maybe you like to see them pitted against each other in skeleton, snowboarding or skiing? I'd love you to fill those prompts or maybe even share a prompt. There's already a few prompts posted on [livejournal.com profile] harrigan's page which you can find here. I might have a tiny thing brewing myself, so please join in and spread the fun!!!

I'm probably not in the best state of mind to give you an enlightened, intellectual review - I just got back and my hands are still shaking.

So this is an emotional reaction post - Anthropoid has a weird name, but that is because this is the name given to the covert operation to assassinate Reinhart Heidrich in Prague in 1942. I deliberately didn't read up the history beforehand, but I think even if you knew the outcome and the ins and outs of it, this would still grip you tight and have you hoping, right up to the very end, that something different was going to happen.

The tension really starts ramping up from the assassination attempt onwards, prior to that the film is about establishing the characters and leading into their plans, debating whether this is such a great idea, and thinking about the likely consequences of success. Then after the assassination attempt, the story turns to what happens next, and how the immediate future pans out for all the characters we've met so far.

Don't go see this if you are feeling fragile - though it might help put your life in perspective. As my hubby said as we walked home, " I thought I had a bad day..."

The only actors I recognised were Cillian Murphy as one of the leads, Ben Wishart in a minor role and Toby Jones, but everyone was excellent. I do recommend it - such a strong, understated cast and script, so well filmed. It felt completely real.

Now I'm going to take some deep breaths and calm myself.

I may be a little obsessed with this Richard Shindell song since hearing Show of Hands do their version last weekend.

Dunno why this vid doesn't credit Mr Shindell but this is definitely his version.

And guess what, it reminds me of the Winchesters.

I know people don't really need my recommendation to know a vid by secretlytodream will be awesome but I wanted to save this one for posterity too, it is so fucking good.

I totally forgot to breathe through my first viewing of this - it encapsulates everything Season 9 could and should have been and makes it ten times more powerful.

Rush - rec

Just been to see Rush - highly recommended! Even if you aren't into motor racing (which I'm not, really) it's tense and exciting, and so well cast too. I started off not really liking either James Hunt (too shallow, too much of a playboy) or Lauda (too uptight and humourless) but by the end I was rooting for both of them.  That final race, even if you know the outcome was heart thumpingly engaging.

Oh and for those Chris Hemsworth fans - he does get nekkid but that is in the first ten minutes, after that you get lots of chest shots but no bum. Not that I was looking.

Two awesome heartfelt and heartbreaking vids in a matter of days, both of which brought a tear to my eye and made me want to indulge in a SPN marathon rewatch from Season 1...
The first is by Loki - superb as always.

This one is a vidder I don't remember coming across before but they have got Dean down here..

And nothing to do with vids but I just found out there is an internet Supernatural radio playing SPN songs all the time! Cool beans!
Supernatural Radio link HERE.

Now I need to get back to watching the Bourne Legacy.

Lincoln

Went to see Lincoln this afternoon with my cousin and I can't recommend it highly enough.  Honestly, I was sitting there all the way through thinking this is SUCH a good film!  The dialogue must have been a script-writer's dream.  Apart from the great speeches that must be a matter of record, the exchanges in the more private scenes were all superb.  Such a rich and varied vocabulary, it was a joy to listen to.

Someone had told me that the film was slow, and I suppose you could say that - in that there wasn't a huge amount of action scenes in it, but it was packed full of tension, and the scenes in congress were really entertaining.  There was one scene in particular that I really felt merited a round of applause.

As for Daniel Day Lewis' Lincoln?  Well.  I was totally convinced that he was the man himself.  He had such a presence, commanded every scene he was in, even when he was just a silhouette, or a profile, or a quiet figure sitting in his chair.  That light tenor voice shouldn't have had so much impact, but somehow it was compelling.  DDL made me love this man - with his humour, and his joy in telling stories, his pain, and his driving passion.  I loved how tactile he was, the way he grasped random people's hands, gripped shoulders, made physical connections.

The whole cast as an ensemble were totally brilliant - I shall certainly buy the DVD because I could watch this over and over.

One minor niggle (and this is my old anti-American prejudice talking here) - the whole premise of the film is the heroic and totally worthy abolition of slavery, which is fine and dandy, but because the focus is so tightly on the USA throughout the film, you could easily go away with the impression that America was the first/only country in the world to think about abolition.  Just a heads up, we'd got rid of it over here in 1772, and across the British Empire by 1833...and even that was late compared to some other countries.  Just sayin'... *wink*

Anyhow, if you haven't been to see it yet, go

Borealis

I just finally got round to watching Ty Olsen's Borealis - wow, but it was powerful good. I can't believe the station probably isn't going to run with it.  The whole cast of characters are engaging on a variety of levels, there is potential for lots of stories - and the setting is really cool (in every sense, being in the Arctic!). I really liked Vic's half Irish half Inuit laconic side kick.

If you haven't seen it yet, here it is, in full on Youtube.

Now I need to belatedly tweet my support.

My brother in law lent us this French film I'd never heard of and it was so good I have to recommend it here.
Here's a promo from IMDB
It is beautifully filmed in a world that is a strange mix of modern and steam punk, in gold and green; the characters are quirky and funny and sympathetically portrayed and the story ir utterly charming.  Go find the DVD!
