[livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang number 2! This time it's for [livejournal.com profile] anniespinkhouse's sweet J2 love story with an AU twist!

The art is mildly spoilery, in that it tells you something about one character's job, and the other illustrates a scene in the fic - but I don't think they are going to mean anything to you unless you read the story, so they won't give away anything major!

First here's Jared's note book and some of his ideas for Jensen's gardens.
Jared's garden design

This next one is a scene inside Felicia's cottage - one for Jared H/C fans 😁
1 interior final scan
I had a lot of fun with the details in this one. I don't often try doing backgrounds so this made a change!

Process Part
The banner was a last minute rush, and I didn't have time to paint it so I gave it a pop of colour digitally. It's sketched in pencil then inked with fineliners. Nothing fancy. I came up with the design based on anniespinkhouse's description of the gates into Jensen's mansion, and weirdly it's quite close to the real life gates to Alnwick castle, which were what she had in mind! I have a page of sketches for this but didn't have time to scan them before I came away so I might add them later when I get home.

I am trying to do things right these days by trial sketching before drawing the actual piece, and there's my trial sketch for the indoor scene. Doing this prep worked well for this picture as the perspective was off in the sketch, so I could correct it in the actual piece.
1 interior sketch idea
As usual though, I preferred a lot of the messy sketch over the final picture.... *sigh*

The pretty border is washi tape, and I had thought I might leave it on to make a fancy frame, but once the picture was coloured the tape looked too fussy, so it came off.

There's not much to say about Jared's notebook - it was just a chance to play with the prettiest colours in my watercolour collection! It didn't actually come out as I intended, and I'd thought to do more 'Jared' notes and sketches, but yeah - didn't happen.

For anyone interested in materials - the sketchbook I used is 100% cotton 230gsm paper by Etchr Labs. it's cold press and has a nice texture. I can't remember which watercolours I used - yikes, it wasn't that long ago but I've forgotten already.

Anyway, if you've made it to the end of this ramble you must be gagging for the story so of you trot - Link to fic: AO3 LJ .

So gorgeous - love the details of the gate, the composition of the sketchbook photo with the rose? camelia? and Felicia's cottage 😭 want to live in that space. πŸ’•

It's a wild rose so quite small. I'd like a place like Felicia's too! I'd need a gardener but there's Jared, so...

Oh, my gosh, the detail of that room and the COLORS! Bright and warm and whimsical β€” positively magical. Wicked watercolor skills, you have them. I’m digging Jared’s notebook, too. And the filigree’d detailing of the bees on the garden gate, wow. πŸ’–πŸ Beautiful job all around!

(I am in love with the little owl figurine on the stove. Lovely touch!)

Hee I don't know where the owl came from, I think he's a self insert. 😎Thank you!

You've been busy! I love your illustrative style and it really shines in all these pieces because of the amount of detail, from the gates (creative titling) to the notebook sketches (beautiful, free lines and coloring) to the whimsical cottage scene with all its creative elements and rich colors. Amazing job!

ohh the banner is so cool. And of course the sleeping Sam on the couch, it's great in all the steps, the sketch and the clean lines. Like each of them gies different feeling. I love!

They're all lovely but that banner really grabbed me. It has such an Art Nouveau feel to it like a Privat-Livemont poster.

I've just started reading this, so I love Jared's notebook so much! And the gate is beautiful, I like the black and white on the green background. The indoor scene is lovely, the colours are so warm and I love the background details, especially the beautiful lampshade. Bravo!

Oh, I love all those beautiful colors and details! I'm very much a fan of the stain glass lamps/lights in the cottage scene. And how you approached Jared's notebook garden layout is a very inspiring choice. It incorporates photography which I haven't seen people use before in a fan challenge so far, and makes me think of how awesome if people could use that medium more in their works. What if people started taking pictures of their local abandon buildings/houses or places that match their author's stories. If they wanted to use models that might be really tough and expensive trying to find ways around that. But, if someone could find a way to pull it off, I bet the end result would be awesome!

Of course, I'm making the assumption that you meant the full photo to be the scene and not just the painting, though.

I did do the photo thing on purpose, so I'm happy you liked it! It just seemed to make sense once my drawing of Jared's garden plan strayed onto the next page. You're right, it would be cool if someone could illustrate a story with their own photos, certainly we could do atmosphere setting, and maybe silhouettes for figures... *ponders*

i love the bees on the banner! they're very summery and just scream "gardens!" to me. and the cottage scene is just really bright and pretty - the flower motif on the wall is great, and i love the hanging lamp, but i think my favorite detail is jensen's fingers in jared's hair.

also, "here be faeries" on jared's sketch, hee. i love that you took a photo of it with the pens and flower, instead of just showing us the sketch. it's a neat little touch of realism.

Jared's garden planning strayed across a double spread so the photo seemed like a fun solution - I'm happy people are enjoying it!

"Nothing fancy," she says, tsk, tsk; look at that adorable gate in the story banner: I LOVE IT, it is very charming!

The water colour notebook with the garden is awesome, love the way you photographed it.

The scene artwork is sweet, I adore the many colourful details: the lamp(s), that cute owl, the whole background. I can tell you've been drawing a lot more lately and you perfected your drawing and colouring, it's so good. Sketching it first really paid off (I know what you mean about prefering the messy pencil version, I'm a big fan of sketchy lines, but the end result is honestly smashing:)
