Tom Ellis ... or not

amberdreamsSince I need to produce something for Tom Ellis to sign before I leave for Italy, I thought I might take a couple of reference photos with me to work from in tonight's sketchbooking class. I kind of like the watercolour techniques we were trying but sadly, the end results don't resemble Tom very much at all. In fact the second one looks more like that Tyler thingy from Teenwolf. Which is weird since I've never watched the show and have only see pics of him at conventions and on Tumblr.
Never mind, it's all good practice!
First one (done on sketchbook paper which is really rubbish at taking watercolour, soaks it up like blotting paper).
Second one (done on this weird plastic-like paper I bought to try out, and it's quite fun to use).
I'm wondering whether I can now go over this subtle watercolour with something else and make it more like Tom.
