I mentioned this the other day but forgot to say why it was so, so good.
Here's one of the trailers to give you a taster, but it really doesn't do the film justice. It's so beautiful to look at, as well as full of gentle humour, pathos and emotion.

I admit, it took me a little while to adjust to the faces - they use a very angular, sharp-featured template for the human characters that I found a bit weird. But the stop animation is fantastic, the colours and visuals so engaging, and the story is absorbing. I loved the mixture of magic and real life, the fact that Kubo is basically his mother's carer and such a strong character that we have to be reminded occsaionally that he's only a little boy. The ending was both uplifting and heartbreaking, and it's well worth sitting through the credits to see the fabulous art work behind the constructions and creatures in the film itself.

Gah. Now I'm kicking myself that I didn't go and see it again while it was on at our cinema.

I saw this on the cinema! And it was such an experience! The story is very eastern (if you know what I mean) I'm ASEAN so it was very intriguing when I saw the trailer for the first time. So you can say I went to see it out of curiosity. I didn't expect much but WOW. I loved it so much. I still doubted if some of the production members are ASEAN though cause there was a strong far-east feel of it! And did you see all the background art work??? They were all so stunning--the village, the sea, the forest, everything!

The art work and the look of the film is just wonderful - it was very Japanese but the colours were richer than Japanese art, and the mother's face was much more alien-looking than traditional Asian. But then she is a magic person so she should look different, right? The whole things was just fabulous.

Damn, now I'm wishing I'd gotten off my arse and gone and seen it, it looks fantastic! It's been a very long time since I watched this genre of film.

It will be worth watching on DVD but a big screen is great for the textures and details...

Thank you for the recommendation, I love the trailer, but I didn't catch it at the cinema either because I wasn't sure if the story was good or not. Will definitely have to look it up now.
