I'm happy to report we have survived a crisis in our household this evening. Paul brought home some cute little Scottie-dog-shaped shortbread biscuits the other day, and tonight I decided to open the packet, grabbed a handful and popped the rest in Paul's biscuit tin - WITH HIS DIGESTIVE BISCUITS. So go on, tell me how many of you knew that this was a terrible breach of biscuit etiquette? You should have seen Paul's look of horror and disgust. HOW COULD I NOT KNOW SHORTBREAD MAKES DIGESTIVES GO SOGGY?

So now the wee shorties are decanted safely into an empty tin of Quality Street and Paul has gone to have a nice relaxing bath to recover from the trauma.

Really?!!! I've never heard that before, and I would never have thought that is would be an issue (I'm guessing there's a science explanation there, but my brain doesn't really do a lot of science). And crap, now I'm trying to remember if at work we've got digestives and shortbread in the same tin!!!

It was so funny, he was convinced I should know this, everyone knows this - I couldn't stop laughing while he was hurriedly stuffing his precious digestives back into their packet!

Hehe!!! And now I'm intrigued about general biscuit etiquette; is this just a shortbread and digestive thing? Or is it the same with other biscuits? I mean will my custard creams and ginger snaps be friendly in the same tin? :)

Paul tells me custard creams also make other biscuits soggy, and this is starting to sound a whole new world of potential biscuit porn!

This entire anecdote is so British! It fills me with joy.

Ha ha IKR? Only us Brits could have such a crisis. In fact he had another trauma to deal with because we found out the other day there is actually a national biscuit shortage at the moment too! Oh the horror! What will he dunk in his hot chocolate now?

*gasp* I didn't know this was a breach of biscuit etiquette, and didn't even know there was a biscuit etiquette, but OH HORROR /o\ (This cracked me up.)

It totally cracked me up too, I had tears running down my face while he was panic-stuffing digestives back into their wrapper...

But you can still smugly relax in your superior biscuit-ownership, because digestives are the worst.

Indeed, shortbread is far tastier. *nods self righteously*

Oh, I'm so glad the digestives survived the onslaught from the wicked shortbread; who knew that such insidious danger lurked within the seemingly tranquil confines of our biscuit tins?

Exactly. It's a lesson well learnt.

Please educate me....

What is a digestive biscuit?

For this Southern-raised American, biscuits are big, fluffy things used to hold sausage patties or dip in sausage cream gravy.... Not quite making the Brit-connection.

Basically, what you Americans call cookies, the Brits and us Aussies call biscuits. Digestives are just a type of biscuit:

What you Southern-Americans call biscuits, judging by the pictures and recipes I've seen online, we would call scones:

Hope this helps! It's another one of those 'divided by a common tongue' things. :)

Also...this conversation inspired me to make Southern-style chicken and biscuits for dinner. BIG hit with hubby! :D So you see, ask a random question and half way across the world you effect someone's dinner plans! :D

Ah yes, I've seen your biscuits - my hubby would say they are a travesty. LOL This probably explains it better than i could...

Bwahahaha! Oh thank you for sharing this. It made me laugh out loud. A crisis narrowly averted indeed. Please tell me that Paul was in his dressing gown and slippers when he discovered this biscuit travesty? I feel that to engage in a proper rant about biscuit etiquette an Englishman really should be in his dressing gown and slippers. ;)

For the record, I had no idea that this whole biscuit segregation was a thing either! :D

Sadly, Paul isn't a true blue Brit as he doesn't even own any slippers. He wasn't even wearing his union jack fleecy pants.

Well, I know it's very bad form to put Ginger biscuits in a tin with other non-gingery ones, but I never realised shortbread made digestives go soggy! Thank goodness the crisis was averted!

I know right? The consequences are unimaginable.

I feel that I have learned something from your pain. It has not been fruitless. There were lessons.

Also, it would have been much sadder if the shortbread had gone soggy rather than the digestives, because cute Scottie shapes and also more butter.

Quite! I'm glad this has been an educational experience. Hopefully it will go some way to ensuring the safety of digestives worldwide.

On a side note, apparently it's illegal in the US to call a digestive a digestive.

LMAO! And welcome to my worlddddd, only in reverse. Steve puts all the biscuits for cheese in one box so they all go stale at once, I hate it *giggleS*
