Meme (and questions below) from[livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri

• Comment with "come at me, bro". Or maybe "I'm in" or something like that ...
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

1. Is there a reason behind your Atheism? (You don't have to go into specifics if you don't want to, just yes or no will make me happy)

When I was at school I was fairly religious in a very teenagey angsty sort of way (reading books about saints) but I never really liked the dictatorial nature of the Church.  Then I started reading more about the history of the growth of christianity, and the way the Church has demeaned the role of women, even demonising us through the ages and I started questioning things more.
And gradually I decided not only was I anti organised religion (most of them suck when you look into them) but that I no longer believe in a higher power either.  It just makes no sense.  I see why people do believe, but it is not for me.

2. If you're feeling down, what's the one thing that can make you feel better?

A cuddle!  Though I don't often feel down these days, which is nice.

3. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up and did you stick to that goal?

An archaeologist.  I did my degree but jobs were few and far between so ended up in an office...I still watch Time Team and the like!

4. Would you ever shave your head? (I did it a while ago, I just like knowing if someone else would, lol)

Ew no! I'd look disgusting and would feel too exposed!!! (You are brave!)

5. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

That's very hard, there are so many interesting people!! From the Dead - I'd go for Eleanor of Aquitaine.  With a life like hers she would have some great stories to tell, even if I reckon she'd be pretty intimidating (intellectually speaking).  Alive - Bill Bailey.

I love Bill Bailey - I bet he'd be a hoot at a dinner party...

Ok, here are your questions:
1. What or who has influenced your art the most?
2. What is your favourite book?
3. what are your five most listened to tracks on your iPod/mp3 player at the moment?
4. If you could choose any career at all (no restrictions due to ability, money, qualifications etc), what would you most like to do?
5. Where in the world was your best holiday and what made it so good?

Lol, awesome!

I honestly shaved my head because I was bored and feeling out of control. It was around the time when I was told that I was legally viewed as disabled, and my life was spiralling out of my control, so I wanted to control SOMETHING. So I shaved all my hair off. It was about a year and a half ago, and now it's a short bob. I'm proud that I did it, it made me feel like my life was actually MINE, but it's not something I would ever think of doing again.

My Atheism stems from losing my grandfather. Like you, when I was a teenager, I was very high up in my church, very proud of my faith. But then my grandfather got ill, and I was due to go on holiday with my friends, the first time I'd been gone without my parents. I didn't want to go, but my grandfather made me, and so I went, and I prayed every night for him to be well. But he died the day after I left. I just thought that was the suckiest thing in the world. Why, if there was some sort of higher power, would He do that to me? Not only that, but my church turned their back on me and none of my congregation came to the funeral. I just had it with religion after that. If people can behave like that who pride themselves on having faith, then I don't want anything to do with them.

God bods always say that everything happens for a reason - honestly, I don't see how that makes things better. And it rally bugs me how many so called Christians (I don't have much experience with other religions to know if they compare) act in distinctly unChristian ways and fail to see any hypocrisy in what they are doing.
The only purpose I can see for religion is to provide a supposrt network for people in the bad times - if they can't even do that (as you found out) then what is the point of them??

Sounds like fun, I'll play!

btw - I completely agree with both your views. I'm non-religious as well. My beef with religion began before I was born when my Catholic (now non-practicing Catholic) mother's priest told her before her wedding to my father that she was marrying an Anglican, all children issuing from the marriage would be bastards in the eyes of her Church.

The story goes that my dad decked him :)

So, I agree with you both, organised religion has no place in my life.

My Mum was an Anglican, my Dad a Catholic so she had to sign me over to the Church - so to speak. Nothing as dramatic as your story though!!!
OK - here are your 5 questions:
1) What makes you angry?
2) What is your favourite kind of movie and why?
3) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
4) What characteristics make up your ideal man?
5) What's your favourite colour?
