Finally getting round to posting a few of my fave pictures from Rome - as usual, I took far too many so it was hard to choose!
But I will start with one of my favourite places - San Clemente. This church encapsulates the history of Rome in one place - 12th Century basilica, on top of a 4th century basilica, which is on top of 1st-3rd Century Roman streets including a temple of Mithras.  Awesome.
They have big signs up everywhere saying no photos so shhhhhhhhh, don't tell!
This is the 12th century church (obviously not a 12th C ceiling!!)

Now the rest under the cut if it works.
the 4th Century basilica underneath the 12th C one...with lots of Roman and 8th/9th sculpture and inscriptions they found while excavating set into the walls.

Just a street scene - outside the Roma Gay Pride cafe on the Via dei San Giovanni in Laterano.  Don't know if the guy is or isn't..! Oh and yes, that is the Colosseum in the background.

I have a thing for the early medieval period, so I'm afraid my photos reflect that!!  Here's San Giorgio in Velabrio, a very nice 7th C church with this lovely 12th C brick and stone facade and tower.

To show I'm not biased, here's some Renaissance classical (not my bag but I kind of liked how this photo turned out anyway).  This is San Giovanni in Laterano, inside the main basilica.  My favourite part of this church is the 12th C cloisters though, they are beautiful.

And of course, I love Roman Rome!  This is the Arch of Constantine from the Via San Gregorio, with the Roman Forum in the background on the left, the church is San Francesca Romana.

Had a go at some evening lamp-lit photography and they came out quite well.  It was great staying where we did, just round the corner from the Colosseum, so convenient for everything.

So what is this, the gate to Hell? Hope, just the passage between the Emperors' palaces on the Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum where the Senate met.

Another of my favourite places in Rome - the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill - and even better, on the day we went it was all free entry.  No idea why, but we weren't going to complain at saving 12 euros each!

Not a great church this one, though it is the only Gothic church in Rome (Santa Maria Sopra Minerva) but it did have Michaelangelo's Risen Christ, and a little man entertained us by climbing onto the altar to dust the giant candelabras, which was fun.

I could go on and on, we managed to pack a lot into our three days, but I'd bore the pants off anyone who is still here, so I'll just wrap this up with a nice little typical Roman street scene.

Now, where did I park my Vespa?

wow!

Beautiful pictures, bb! I'm so happy you had a great time. Rome is a beautiful town full of treasures and you probably needs years to discover them all. <333

Hee, the scooters. I own one as well. You can't survive in a big town without one.

p.s. Please, darling, could you put the pics behind a cut? Here's the code if you don't know it: <*lj-cut*> pictures or text goes here <*/lj-cut*> [without the asterics].

I'll have a go...I tried putting pics behind LJ cuts before but it didn't work - it worked ok for text but not pics... :-(

Yes Roma is a beautiful and exciting city - this is the 6th time I've visited (I think) and I haven't got bored yet. I want to go back again next year for sure.

Thank you very much. The cut should work with everything, so that's weird. It's possible that it's the layout you're using that has a glitch? Or, do you post with rich text or html? In case, try out html posting. That always works.

Wonderful photos. Remind me of my own sightseeing tour in Rome.

And I know it's your own journal, so you can do whatever you want there, but it would be great, if you still added lj-cuts.
Makes it much easier on your friends-pages.

I've tried! I can't get it to work for me. At least not in edit mode anyway. So it looks like I'd have to take this post down and start again, which would take ages, sorry. BTW, did you use LJ cuts for your last post of the Castel Sant Angelo pics because that didn't show under a cut for me - and when I first went onto your journal each picture was full size on my page (which was strange). Not complaining, just wondering how this thing works.

I didn't at first for the one in all_spn. changed that later.
I did have lj-cuts for the one in my journal.
And yeah, stupid photobucket seems to have cached the big versions of the photos, cause the resizing/replace original didn't seem to show for the version in my journal :( so I added additional width parameter to my entry. Not ideal, but I didn't want to rename all my photos and I'm guessing, it's just a temporary problem anyway.

Right....much of this is still a mystery to me (as you can tell).

Oh hi you had a vespa. We had a car. Wow the traffic was something else. I bet you had the best idea to get a vespa. And we didn't see San Clemente, but saw the Piazza di Navona and the Vatican. I love the Spanish steps and the gelato. I know that's not a sight to see.LOL But i liked it. Hugs you

Oh ye gods the gelato - I lived on gelato and pizza rustica...
And no way would I dare drive anything round Rome, that traffic is just crazy - we walked everywhere!! The Vespa thing was just a joke.. :D

Oh Gosh silly me then.
We took the car cause my husband wanted to drive to the city for sightseeing while I was at the con and then it kind of stuck for the remaining of our stay. Kind of like us stuck in traffic all the time. Next time. A hotel at the Piazza di spagnia and walking.

Absolutely - the city is so small really, most places you can get to really easily walking and everything else there are buses and trams. Driving is very entertaining to watch, not participate in!! :D

This is only a sample of what she has to offer - don't forget the food, the ice cream, the traffic chaos which is so much fun to watch, the elegantly dressed people, the nuns, the glow in the dark baby jesuses....

These look awesome!!! I can see you had one hell of a good time in Rome :))))

And boy, that door to the Senate is awesomely freaky, with all that light.
You didn't had to pay the entry fee because it was the cultural week. I freaked out when I found out that, the week after we left, every museum was free of charge *head desk*

Is there more? I would love to see more of your pictures :)))

Culture week eh? I hope we coincide with that week next year, it was damn handy!
