I've had a go at this exercise on wedraweveryday, or at least made a start. This sketch wasn't what I intended to do at all, but I started with the circle and the oval and instead of doing blocks of shading which I meant to do, this happened. Still it's a nice way to try out my new Conte sepia charcoal pencils - I think I rather love them already!

I'm really happy to take any concrit - I don't know if I'll be able to get back to this during the week due to all the real life stuff going on, but I would like to finish the exercise. For instance - how do you get the background outlines faint enough that they aren't so obvious when you overlay the main drawing? Should I have done the outline with a graphite pencil instead of the charcoal? Should I have sketched out the angles and planes before getting carried away with the detail of Jared's features?

I do think the circle and oval thing helped, though I'm not sure I added the chin/jaw correctly.

Got to say, Jared's face is awesome for angles.
Oh and sorry about the stray hair that seems to have found it's way into the photo LOL

That's an amazing start! It's much better than I could ever do, back when I was drawing. I hope you post updates of this as you keep going.

Aw thanks, you should take up that pencil again - I stopped for many years and SPN was a great excuse to start over. Plus we have this drawing practice challenge happening over on wedraweveryday you could flex your drawing muscles on.

Yay, join us! We are varying states of incompetence over there, it's very low pressure as we are really just starting out. As you can see this was our first week's exercise and there are tutorials on there to try.

I wish I could offer some useful concrit, but alas, I'm no good with the technical stuff. But I can say that the likeness is wonderful; the strong brow and the angles of his face, and shape of the nose. Wonderful stuff!!!

Oh wow, I love this--and tbh love the residual background lines. THEY'RE SEXY. <3 His nose and the arch of his forehead particularly scream JP to me here. Love the active, sketchiness of this.

I am a fan of sketchy sketches myself - but I might try and finish this one off a bit. Thanks!

I think this is fantastic! I love the strong lines. I think you nailed the whole eyes/cheekbone/nose angles perfectly, and then the shading of the forehead with that ridge, and the cheekbone.

Thankee! Sometimes it's better to work quick n dirty instead of over thinking it

Oooh, very nice! As for the background outlines... I pretty much only work with pencil, and you can erase the lines. You might be able to erase the charcoal lines with a kneaded eraser, or maybe you can smudge them away a bit with a tissue?

Ta muchly! Yeah, I could try the putty rubber, and I think I'll do pencil next time for the foundation too.

Jared's face *is* amazing for angles, have to be honest, if you're going to use anyone's for this exercise, his is perfect! The likeness is fantastic honey!
