Week 1 - Planes of the face - Jared

I've had a go at this exercise on
wedraweveryday, or at least made a start. This sketch wasn't what I intended to do at all, but I started with the circle and the oval and instead of doing blocks of shading which I meant to do, this happened. Still it's a nice way to try out my new Conte sepia charcoal pencils - I think I rather love them already!
I'm really happy to take any concrit - I don't know if I'll be able to get back to this during the week due to all the real life stuff going on, but I would like to finish the exercise. For instance - how do you get the background outlines faint enough that they aren't so obvious when you overlay the main drawing? Should I have done the outline with a graphite pencil instead of the charcoal? Should I have sketched out the angles and planes before getting carried away with the detail of Jared's features?
I do think the circle and oval thing helped, though I'm not sure I added the chin/jaw correctly.

Got to say, Jared's face is awesome for angles.
Oh and sorry about the stray hair that seems to have found it's way into the photo LOL
