I've been staying with my Mum for a few days, and we are away for the weekend with her now, and to be honest, though she's doing great in many ways, it's hard to see her on her own without Dad. Anyhow. I wrote a sort of drabble poem.

Marian, Alone.

How did it happen? After all these years – to go from we to I,
From us to me, from ours to mine.
Do you think it will ever stop hurting?

At breakfast, lunch, dinner time
I sit at the table alone, facing an empty chair.
A single plate, a single knife, nothing there to share.
I divide the bread and cheese into two portions anyway.

How did it happen? After all these years – to go from we to I,
From us to me, from ours to mine.
I know this hollowness is here to stay.

I miss you, my love.

Oh hon, that was beautiful but very sad. I had a great aunt and uncle who were my only older relatives (all my grandparents had died by the time I was about 15). They never had children and I always used to worry about what would happen when one of them died because they were just a unit. Sadly my uncle died after a short illness 15 years ago, but my aunt is approaching 90 and still going strong. Seeing her carry on 'alone' gave me hope that it's possible to go on when you've lost the other half of yourself.

Love to you and your mum.

Aww, that's lovely and heart hurty at the same time. There is something about this time of year that seems to magnify loss a bit. Thinking of your Mom and you.

This is really beautiful and is relevant to so many people who have lost their loved ones, especially their 'other halves'.

Thinking of you and your mum, especially at this time of the year

Oh honey, that's so beautiful, effecting and really sad. Watching my Gramma go on without the love of her life was extremely hard going! My Grandpa was only 54 and she was only 43 when he died and she never remarried, never even considered finding herself a companion.

She had offers, but she always answered honestly, "I had my true love, for however long, I don't need another!"

*hugs*

Please give your mama my love hun!

This is so sad - poignant is absolutely the right word. I really like it as a piece, and also for the meaning. Wishing you and your mum the best especially as Christmas comes up
