When you attacked Charlie Hebdo you attacked a fundamental principle, that of free speech.
Well I tell you now, we will not be silenced. We will shout out the horror and indignity and utter wrongness of your actions. We will challenge your beliefs when they go against the hard won freedoms of our existence – the right to equality, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. We will fight for the right of all people to work, live and love whomever they choose, to worship their god or gods or none.
Now you have attacked again, but this time, whatever you told yourselves when you set out last night about your high ideals and principles, it is just people you have targeted. Ordinary, every day people of all faiths, colours and nationalities. This was not east versus west, righteousness versus decadence. This was simply indiscriminate mayhem perpetrated against people who had families, friends, and lovers, just like you.
Of course we are afraid of violence, of the uncertainty of where another attack like this might come, and when. But that doesn’t mean we will surrender to something that is fundamentally WRONG.
Whatever happens in the future, however far the hate-driven religion (I won’t call it Islam, because Allah is full of compassion, and you have none) that you espouse takes this world, you can be sure of one thing.
