Yup,
spn_cinema again! I'm not sure how I ended up doing so many fills for this but who cares! It's been fun. This art is for the ever charming and lovely
firesign10, who decided to rejig American Grafitti. Fortunately before she knackered her shoulder! It wan't a film I'd ever seen, so I decided to download it on Amazon and have a watch after reading the fic - to get the ambience, you know.
To be honest I didn't find the movie that great, I was bored most of the time. My fave parts were the town racer guy and the teenage girl, that was amusing and cute.
I'm glad to say the fic version is way more entertaining! LOL
So click on the banner to read the fic!

Because I've taken on too many challenges of late, this one has ended up with banner, one text divider and one scene illustration.
Here's young Sammy after his big Bro, Adam, gave him the keys to the Impala.

The text divider (which will make sense when you read the story!)

The process stuff:
The banner was a really terrible childish attempt to use some of my lovely (expensive!) coloured paper and some pastel pencils I bought on a whim. Hum. Not sure I'll be using them again!

So I thought rather than waste it all together, I'd slap it into PS and see what I could do. After layering and playing with some nice textures, I managed the animation, which doesn't look too awful.
Sam started out as a pencil drawing based on a still of Dean in the Impala from Season 1, and a bts photo of Jared (again Season 1) laughing. I had to change the position to move Sam into the driver's seat and have his hand on the door, so it doesn't bear much resemblance to the reference now.

I then painted him and the car in PaintTool Sai, and created the background in PS from a photo search for US 1960 diners and a Biggerson's sign. For those interested in that effect I created - I had three layers - two were the composite photo with a middle layer where I'd used the Find Edges filter on the same image. I then set that middle edged layer on Pin Light, and the top photo layer on Colour Burn. Ta da!

Date: 2015-09-22 08:57 am (UTC)I like that you experimented with pencils; trying new media can be so daunting. The digital layering makes the banner really powerful and it creates a great depth, especially in the scene. I'm also mesmerized by Sam's hand and how you did the window.
The text divider is darling:)
"Only made a banner, text divider and one scene," she says. THAT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH. Sorry for going all caps on you but I see more and more artists on my flist feeling guilty for not making a full graphic novel to accompany a story and it makes me sad. It's quality not quantity that matters. Also: having fun;)
*smishes you*

Date: 2015-09-22 09:28 am (UTC)and Sam in the car, laughing, ah what a lovely sight! :)
And I love the diner thingy you did - it's ... odd, but in a really awesome way. It's ... I can't decide if it's colorful or all white. It's kinda spooky, but in a very amazing way!
And kudos to you for experimenting with new media - while it can be really scary to do so, it can also be very rewarding to know that YOU can do it and you did it beautifully, I really love the banner. It's dark, but light and it just gives off vibes of car racing at night (dunno how to explain) but it's very beautiful :)
