Here's a birthday Sammy/Saint Sebastian for you - hurt purely for your pleasure.
chomaisky recommended I fiddle with it and helped me gain this final, contrasted version, but I've included the earlier versions for giggles, and because it looks like a sequence.





For those with an interest in such things, I started with this painting of Saint Sebastian for the posture reference. I had in mind something much more Beardsley-eque but when I drew the tree (in biro on paper) and started playing around with it in PS, it turned into something much less decorative. I should probably have used a reference for Sam's face.

cho reckons I was influenced by my recent binge-watch of Hannibal! It's true the first version of the branches were not so antler-like as this final version, so she may be right!

Wow, this is a whole martyrology in itself...! The arrow-fletchings in the antler-branches; this suffering is...sinuous and organic and dark and strange and Samstien (!) looks a part, already, of the tree. (Beautiful face! Haunted. Something in the hair and ears and eyes that's a bit wild-animal.)

(I can see how this would be so cool Beardsleyesque, too, but I love it this way

Thank you for your attention to detail! :D I have Samsebastian in my head because I keep thinking in Italian (San Sebastiano). I'm not really a Beardsley-esque artist so this was probably never going to work for me, but I'm happy you like it as it is!

the tree looks like antlers which makes me think of the creepy man-stag from hannibal. this is not a bad thing! i love sam's face, and the way he's kind of hunched over, and i think chomaisky's high-contrast suggestion was a good one. it makes for a very dramatic pic.

Fuck, I love this.
The body position is unique and challenging. I like the choices you made re: cropping the figure, and I LOVE inverse tone for the whole piece. Plus, it's a fascinating visual story as well. Nicely done!
