Sam and Dean in a hunt, where success feels like failure.

“Dean, no! It’s suicide!”

 

Sam braced himself as Dean frantically tried to push past, back into the raging inferno.

 

He felt his brother’s resistance collapse, accepted the dead weight of Dean’s anguish and broken body into his arms.

Gently he lowered the semi-conscious hunter to the cold damp ground, murmuring words of comfort he knew were empty.

 

“There was nothing we could have done, Dean.  No way we could have got them out.”

 

Hazel eyes locked with his, reflecting nothing but flames.

“Dean.  We can’t save everyone.”

 

Behind them in the shadows, the woman and her surviving child wailed, despairing.
