I had the great pleasure of working with coragyps on her chilly but heartwarming Wincestiel story, Ice Fatigue. You can read it here on AO3 (story link will be live soon). It's a beautifully written Cas POV, with my fave kind of Cas - the slightly bemused, alien yet vulnerable angel, dealing with feelings for two confusing and fustrating humans. My Sam gals will enjoy it too, methinks.
The scene I've ilustrated is right at the start and fortunately I'm not giving anything away if I tell you things do get better (and warmer) for Castiel after this bad beginning! π

And as usual, here's the bit about how I got from a to b.
As soon as I read the description of Cas sinking slowly under the ice, I had the image in my head and wanted to try and show it. I started with a gelli print, using some cut paper shapes to give the jagged feel of the ice. I did three different versions but this was the closest to the image in my head.

Then I drew floating Castiel in my sketchbook, inked him then painted him with watercolours.

I scanned both pieces and mashed them together in Affinity to make it look like Cas was actually underwater.
The cover pic came next, using the same process, and the same gelli print background, This time I added a drawn and watercoloured version of Dean's arm. I may have gone a little overboard with the freckles - call it artistic licence. π

And there you have it. I won't bore you with the details of all the researching for underwater ice diving or other references - just take my word for it - there was research aplenty.
