Not so Fantastic Beasts II

I had high hopes for this one. I really enjoyed the first one - Eddie Redmayne was excellent, the rest of the cast were also good with interesting characters, and there was a reasonable story. The special effects felt like they were there to create a sense of wonder that complemented the narrative, and the beasts were fun.
So what about FB2?
Disappointing, basically. Characters behaved illogically, the story was over complicated, over long and (possibly/probably deliberately) trying to be mysterious. Characters that had appeared to be dead at the end of the first film were resurrected without any real reason. Eddie Redmayne felt under used. So did Jacob. Queenie's actions throughout made no sense. There was zero chemistry between Scamander and Tina, or between any of the characters, except perhaps the boy Whatsisname - Credence - and the snake woman. And then to cap it all, the whole nearly 3 hours turned out to be a set up for part 3, and my movie buddy Christine tells me there are going to be FIVE of these movies. *sigh*
Once again we are suffering from the Rowling effect - take something that would be excellent and drag it out until it’s stretched so thin it no longer holds the attention at all.
Though there were a couple of fun bits and some very spectacular special effects, overall I was mostly bored.

Date: 2018-11-28 02:27 pm (UTC)I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought it didn't make sense - I had to nip out to the loo and missed five minutes in the middle and when I sat down again I was thinking what the hell is going on? I only missed a tiny bit, there can't have been that much plot twisting during that time!

Date: 2018-12-08 06:53 pm (UTC)I had suspected that Credence would return because there was a tiny bit of the Obscuros that was shown to be escaping in the first film.
The Tina-Newt romance also felt unnecessarily drawn out. I was actually rooting for them, but they added so many delays and complications that weren’t really believable... what a shame.
