PHEW!

I got good news yesterday about my dead hard drive - apparently it must be a Winchester (or maybe the Dread Pirate Roberts) because it's alive after all. It was just a faulty cable, so it was only mostly dead and temporarily so. Phew!!!

Yesterday I took it to Norwich to have a proper seeing to by the Apple Store genius bar. The guy plugged it in and told me within two minutes that it was probably an internal cable fault (a known error) and not the disk. Sure enough, after leaving it with them for five and a half hours, they'd scanned every byte of the hard drive and it was FINE. Fucking fine. All that worry and expense was totally unfounded. Plus they did the repair under consumer law for free, as it was a known fault and I was within 6 years of purchase (though oput of the three year warranty period).

I went into our local shop today and complained to the manager - I have a full refund! Stupid boy, misdiagnosing my baby, I think he'll be gettng a bollocking from his boss when he comes into work tomorrow morning. I don't know what the hell Barrie (silly spelling) did when he ran his diagnostic, but he clearly didn't know what he was doing.

In October I'm going to take my machine up to see my Mac friend, Jim, who's going to fit my Samsung 1TB solid state drive for me, and then I'll have my old (intact and undamaged) hard drive as a backup. As well as Dropbox, and MyPCBackup (if they ever sort out why I can't see my own files on their system!) and my portable 2TB external drive, and my old iPod (which is a 160GB hard drive), and putting all my photos on Flickr - between that lot, I should be covered, don't you think?

Paranoid, moi? Never. LOL

Then I need to decide whether to upgrade my OS to High Sierra - and risk software like Photoshop not working. I'll leave that for another day though. This was all taxing enough for my poor brain. (And nerves).

In the meantime I'll just sit here and sigh with happy relief over my lovely bookmarks, and my passwords, and all my art files being there for me, and having my calendar back online so I know what the hell I'm supposed to be doing and when (well, as much as I ever do, anyway).

Oh, what a relief!!!! Yeah to it only being a faulty cable.

I am running Photoshop CS6.5 on my mac laptop using OS El Capitan 10.11.6 from all my research and an actual experiment going one OS higher to test, (which didn't work at all). This was the last OS I could get Photoshop/Indesign etc to work reasonably on, on my laptop but it all depends on the vintage of your machine. I wish you luck if you do try and would be interested in the results.

Oh that's interesting - my Macbook is the 2012 model (though it was bought new in 2014). It has the DVD port and all the other ports which was while I bought it then because they were just phasing out all those useful things! I did some research at the weekend and the article I read seemed to be saying CS6 was ok on High Sierra, but maybe not. I'm still on El Capitan at the moment.

Go for it. It might work great. I would just be backed up with a version of time machine that included a boot disc, not just backup files just in case.

yeah, I'm going to do some clearing of space on my hard drive first, I'll worry about upgrading the OS when I know I've got everything else sorted (AND backed up!). No more disruption yet!

Phew, that is a huge relief, but like you said that really should have been spotted earlier. At least everything is fine, and you ahven't lost your files etc, and things can return to normal :)

SO happy it worked out in your favor! I actually did a back-up of all my stuff on my external drive today (mostly because I'm trying out my mom's desktop that she never ever uses. Bookmarks are gonna be hard, but my laptop still works, so I'll be able to at least get them a bit.

I'm not sure how bookmarks can be backed up if the browser itself isn't saving them somewhere. Good luck with your enterprise!

Still caused chaos for me and I'm now trying to sort everything out but I was geared up for the worst and yay! It didn't happen.

Phew! Glad it worked out. You have many, many more things than I do--MacBook, iPod, iPad (actually an old and a new), and my iMac at work. And they all work pretty much the same. Anything else would confuse me too much.

Hi! I've been absent, but now I'm back. I'm trying to read backwards, so it will take me a while.

Nice to have you back - don't worry about catching up, sometimes it's just impossible!

I think we have the same stuff - except I don't go to work any more. When I did work we had PCs so now I'm saved from my poor old brain having to adjust between using Windows and Macs! I'm so thankful my mum had bought a new Macbook and was happy to loan it to me! I'd have been in such a state if I'd only had the iPad to try and sort everything out. First world problems, huh!
