Process:
My friend Lois does this thing where she paints or draws over existing pictures and it's knid of cool, do I thought I'd have a go. This is a craft card pad with different patterns - wood panels, leaves, etc. i'm not sure what crafty things you are supposed to do with it but I drew Death over this one using pastel pencils and Derwent drawing pencils (mostly whites, creams, greys and dark browns). Then I photographed it and did the text and some edits.
Here's the naked picture without any photoshopping. I know, it doesn't look much different LOL - I added some black and more white highlights in PS and fiddled with the levels. I'm just including it for completeness.

Oh man, I love Death in pastels--such a good medium for him. And the added eerieness of overlaying him on top of such rich textures and patterns is SUPERB. Really cool project!

Cool pattern you picked for the background; working with existing cards is fun, I tried some papercutting with shopboughtcards, the effect is always surprising. I love how the background is still vaguely visibile underneath the paint. Death has such powerful lines in his face and in the spot you picked for painting the pattern nicely follows the shape of the angles of his cheekbones. I also really like how those flowers make his clothes look very fancy:)

It's actually quite fortuitous I started drawing his face where i did because none of that was planned out. I even managed to get a flourish of decorative plants right where his hair parts. Weird!

Bb, that is so cool! I love how textured and 'rich' looking the background is; like a brocade smoking jacket that I can *absolutely* see Death wearing.

And Death! Omg, you drew Death, he looks awesome, bb, wow, love the medium you chose; i've always loved it when you can see the texture and strokes of the color/pencil in a drawing. SO COOL!

Phew that's good news! I only thought afterwards that you might have preferred something digital or more 'clean' in its finish. Especially as the textures also mean Death kind of has whiskers... LOL

It's counter-intuitive (for me anyway!) - Lois uses second hand coffee table books to sketch in at our life drawing classes and gets some really interesting effects. I'm not that bold, plus defacing a book makes me all squirmy, but this was ok. The book of pattered card was only £3 so it was cheap enough to make me brave! LOL

that is the coolest idea, altho the pattern under death's face makes it look like he has, like, cat whiskers. he's got an excellently cadaverous face, tho, aside from that.
