Such a pretty town! And so quiet inside the walls. There are cars and traffic, but mostly it's the rattle of bicycle baskets and the sound of chattering school parties that fill the air. Up on the massive walls there's a wide road but no cars except for one polizia car and a gardening truck. And lots and lots of walkers, joggers and cyclists!

I took a bunch of photos, and as usual the whole album is here if anyone is really interested. Scroll down for Lucca. But for now, it's mini Pic Spam Time!

First a wee vid - Panning round the Piazza Anfiteatro - the ex Roman ampitheatre
Looking round the ex-ampitheatre
View of the Duomo from the walls - I never actually got down to see this lovely building because I started by walking round the walls to the far side, wandered round the centre, got a bit lost, then went back up to the walls to complete my circuit. Maybe I'll just have to come back and see the bits I missed, huh?

I loved these letterboxes!
cute postboxes
I still remember seeing Saint Catherine of Sienna in her Snow White glass coffin in Assisi - it's so weird. This one is Saint Zita, with her roses and lace and decay.
Saint Zita - not embalmed, apparently
Richard of Wessex is more discreet (but then he's not a saint so maybe that explains it). Apparently he was on a pilgrimage back in the late 700s AD, and died in Lucca. So they popped his remains in this handy 3rd century Roman sarcophagus. It must have been a child's as it was only about 4 foot long. It was a long way to come just to die, but there you go.
S Frediano, Richard of Wessex's tomb
Melone e fragola, first ice cream of the day. My hair's a mess and for some reason I seem to have the reflection of a chair-spider in one eye. But at least I'm smiling.
Lucca ice cream #1
The piece de resistance of the day, a shop put up some information about the Roman ampitheatre. I want some of this wind you can chisel

Though the random sculptures hidden in various buildings nestled under the walls were also rather fun.
Cool sculpture hanging round under the walls
Thursday I'm chilling in Pisa, trying to avoid being bitten by more mosquitos. That's two mornings in a row the whine of a mozzie has woken me up - and this in spite of sleeping with the damn window closed last night. The bastard must have been lurking in the room from the day before but for some reason waited until 7am to bite me. Argh. I hate the little fuckers. Come the revolution, they'll be first to go.
And in summary on that point...
Graffiti...
Angela arrives this afternoon and once she's dumped her stuff we climb the leaning tower. My legs are not ready for this challenge! LOL

Glowy as in red in the face, yup. I'm having a problem with that at the moment LOL But yes, that's one of the reasons I love Italy so much, history everywhere!

I didn't have pizza in Lucca, no! I had pasta pomodoro which wasn't very nice. But never mind, hey. ;)

I've been MIA from LJ, and I come back and see you made it back to Italy! :D You're one busy wildlife-painting, Europe-traveling beaver. I love all the gorgeousness and creepiness.

That's a great pic of you enjoying your ice cream! You look very happy and relaxed - anyone would think you're in Italy on holiday - and will see J2 next week!!
