Had an interesting morning at a seminar by a publishing agent giving tips on how to get published; followed by a brief one to one with her in the afternoon to talk about my draft book.  We had to provide a summary and synopsis, plus 5 pages of the draft in advance and then she could comment on our submissions.  I was fairly apprehensive, particularly as she said in the morning session that her speciality was literary novels (soooooo far removed from my fantasy/sci-fi effort!) BUT
she said
  • there was nothing wrong with my writing style or language used (which was a relief as I think her standards are quite high!)
  • it was fast paced and a good start for a book (in terms of gripping the reader etc)
  • the prologue was the right length and had enough in it to whet the appetite
  • she thought it was a young adult audience (which was kind of surprising but very useful)
She's given me the name of the agent in her company who deals with young adult books so I can submit it properly to her, and from the morning session I now have a much better idea of the best way to write the submission....so I think I am running out of excuses not to do this thing.  I just need to do some research on which other publishing agents are in this particular genre, make the final edits my good friend Katje has recommended and then get emailing.

Eeek!
