Season 11 Episode 4 Baby - spoilers ahoy!

I’m a little bit incoherent even after watching it twice. So much Winchester goodness wrapped up in a single episode; Robbie Thompson deserves a fucking medal. Any episode that starts with Dean unconscious and bloody, face down and handcuffed in the back seat of the Impala is always going to grab my attention, but then to follow up that pretty scene with a complete, superbly crafted Impala POV story? Pure gold, my friends, pure fecking GOLD.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

·      Brotherly conversations about food and drink and sex
·      Heart to hearts that didn’t involve the blame game, but truth-speaking and acceptance
·      Giving the Winchesters a reason to laugh together
·      Sam having an intriguing, unexplained vision
·      A TON of beautiful close ups of rugged, bashed-up, weary, un-shaven boys
·      So many magnificently framed and lit shots
·      A plot that made sense and even though all the pieces fit together almost too conveniently, it was done with such affection it worked
·      Monsters that were old style, gory fun
·      The Darkness as a clear and present danger in the background, that was all the more ominous because we didn’t see it
·      Sam got to have invisible sex
·      Dean teasing Sam about his invisible sex
·      Dean got beat to hell by a middle aged lady
·      Baby being badass throughout, still running at the end even though she too was beaten to hell
·      Car washing and Dean in shorts (even though we didn’t get to SEE it!)

Was there anything to nitpick?

Probably, but not for me, not right now. I’m just going to wallow in the sheer delight of this for a while, and wish they’d do a whole season of episodes just like this one. Maybe they could alternate Baby’s POV with the Bunker’s.

·      Give us Sam and Dean, together and apart, kicking monster ass and talking about their angsty little lives.
·      Give us Castiel on the phone or in the Bunker being weird and otherworldly.
·      Leave the rest of the boring demons and angels somewhere in the distance farting about doing whatever they want to do, and only bother us with them when something fun happens.
·      Give us the Darkness as a scary unknown who nobody can talk to and nobody understands, so the only way it can communicate is through Dean’s dreams.
·      Give us the anti-Darkness (be it God or whatever) in a similar manner, only willing or able to communicate via Sam’s visions.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. That would be SPN, cooking on gas.

I thought it was AWESOME, which is something I haven't thought in a long, long time. They've had a few eps with bits of awesome the past couple of seasons, but this is the first full-on, 100% squee-worthy episode since I don't know when.

Yes yes they do - just sign up Robbie Thompson to write the whole lot. He has his flaws but he loves the show, he loves the boys and he loves Baby, and that makes up for a great deal

For the first time in a long time I got to watch Sam and Dean for a whole episode and felt they were 'real' again. These guys totally sell their characters as 100% fucked up demon hunters, they sell the drama, the excitement, the sympathy and the humour and they drag you into their world, they make it real, they make you feel for them.

Such a welcome contrast to the plastic world of angels, demons and witches - mere shadows and stupid, over the top caricatures.

Very happy to see this one.

This was such a crazy good episode. Your list is spot on and I might add the music was great and they let the dialogue play out in certain scenes without the need to add 'dramatic' music.
Great to see the boys relaxed and smiling and together. If there's any episodes in the future that get me down, I'll just go back and watch this one😁

OMG, do you mean they had fun? |It feels like Sam and Dean haven't had fun fighting monsters since... season 5? And Jensen and Jared haven't had fun being Sam and Dean since sometime after that.IMO.

The other day I was trying to decide what my favorite Supernatural was because my family always laughs at me and says they're all my favorite...which is true. But now I actually have a favorite. Though, admittedly, a lot more happened in my head with those handcuffs on then they showed on screen ;)

Squee - they had me at the THEN intro!!!! I loved this episode, I'm pretty sure I can't think of a single thing that I didn't enjoy, and there were just so many highlights that if I listed them all, I'd end up simply re-capping the while thing!!!

I feel like Robbie might have been stalking us, making a list of things that we wanted to see just so that he could then deliver them all. I mean, the boys talked...they communicated...about feeling and stuff \o/

Loved it, and I'm still on a high from seeing it three times last night!!!

I loved this episode like ... like ... like I love cookies and coffee (and that's a lot LOL) and I just ... THIS is WHY I love this show - Sam and Dean, being brothers!!! THIS is why I fell in love with this show in S2 (yes, I started watching when we were only in S2 :))! I just NEED the boys, the car, an open road and freaky monsters that leave our boys bloody and beaten but still kicking ass and taking names!!!! ugh, THIS episode was ... seriously all that I love about this show!
And maybe my definition of 'teasing' is different than yours, but I didn't really see Dean teasing Sam about him having sex. I just saw big bro being proud of his baby bro for scoring some :) ya know!? I didn't really see any teasing there :)
And uff I could go on and on about angels and demons and them farting (hahahaha, good one there, babe) somewhere far away, but yeah I agree with you. I would be incredibly super amazingly happy with just a whole season of episodes like this, because this was totally S1, S2! BUT, well we all know who in this fandom would raise hell if there was no Cass in every ep *sigh* whatever .....

But yes, this ep was more or less a (dare I say it? eh, I'll say it) 'love letter' to all us who love Sam and Dean and their brotherly bond! :) Thank you Robbie for this episode! :)

I so agree with your review of the episode and I really hope this is the direction this season is following, with the brothers together, fighting whatever comes at them.
