We went to see the Fassbender Macbeth yesterday.

Wow, it was grim. Overwhelmingly and unremittingly grim. And the violence was hard to watch even though mostly they weren't showing more than blood sprays. Seeing Banquo's little boy witnessing his father's murder was particularly horrible. The cinematography is, on the other hand, beautiful if also somewhat overwhelming. As my hubby pointed out, it felt like every single shot had been thought out to the nth degree, with Oscars in mind. There were no 'ordinary' scenes, so after a while, it was like trying to eat a whole, very rich chocolate cake all at once.

Having said that - it was definitely worth seeing. Though I expect some folk might need subtitles for the more thick Scottish accents!

I kind of wondered if Fassbender's version was going to be heavy on the grim and ghastly, but I'm still so intrigued to see it! Macbeth is a drastic play as it is, full of pain and heart ache and violence, but film makers have been amping up the intensity in Shakespeare for years...I'm slightly surprised it took this long to get this kind of version of Macbeth going!

When I was a tiny tike (about 13) I went to a production of Macbeth with Rufus Sewell in the lead, it was a definite experience, and kind of scarred me for life, but in a good way.

I'll certainly have to check this out, thanks hun :)

I have been debating going to see this. And your review kind of confirmed what I thought; the movie is as dark and grim as it is beautiful. As much as I love Michael Fassbender as an actor, and I do think the cinematography looks stunning, I think the violence and full-on intensity might be a bit much. Maybe I'll wait and watch it on DVD, at least that way I can have a time-out ;) I was going to say that at least the Scottish accents wouldn't be a problem for me, but they do sound very thick and at times rather incomprehensible in the trailer. I do wonder how non-scots will cope!

Thanks for your thoughts!
