Absence - two drabbles

Challenge word: absence
Warnings: none
Summary: For the Winchesters, losing each other isn’t always about dying.

Then
Sam without a soul doesn’t sleep, and it creeps Dean out. He leaves Sam in their room and finds the nearest bar. If he’s drunk enough he might be able to return, crash out for a while. Though he’s always much too aware of the terrible absence that sits in the shape of his brother on the other bed.
Now
Sam hunts. The terror of what he will find when he catches up with his demon brother is ever present, but he ignores it as best he can.
When he finally looks into those beetle-black eyes, Dean isn’t there.

Summary: Season 1 Pilot – the Winchesters are back on the road together for the first time in a long time.

Sam shoves the box of cassettes back under the seat with a casual lack of care that makes Dean wince. He’d forgotten how much space Sam’s long limbs take up in the shotgun seat, all knees and elbows and shaggy hair, and Dean thought he’d gotten used to having emptiness there instead of his little brother, but now he knows he was lying to himself.
He supresses a grin, turns the volume up just to see Sam flinch and scowl.
“It isn’t true, you know,” he says.
Sam lifts a brow.
“That absence makes the heart grow fonder, bitch.”
“Jerk.”

Date: 2014-10-05 08:39 pm (UTC)I love these--that first one especially. Juxtaposing S6 and S9 like that really brings out the emotion (or perhaps chilling lack thereof, wrt the subject of each narrator's ruminations) of both circumstances. <333
