Nine Season Countdown to Season 10 - Season 3

7 days to go which means we are celebrating Season 3 today.


Season 3 is a funny one - initially I came away thinking I was that keen on it, but there were some great episodes, but having done a re-watch of the whole season a couple of times - it was actually much better than I'd thought. With Dean's deal hanging over their heads, there is a quality of impending doom that does actually build over episodes, in spite of the shortened season and the writing strike. Or maybe that just meant we missed some fillers that could have lessened that feeling? I don't know.

We got some great new characters that I loved to wonder about, and maybe even hate a little - like Ruby 1

and go on, I'll admit it - I really loved Bela and her one-liner put downs of Dean

and I know some people hated the episode where we found out she too was under the demonic axe, but I actually thought that gave her character depth, and I felt more sympathy for her after the child abuse reveal. Plus, you know, we have Bela to thank for Dean (and Sam) in a tux! Which is my cue to post this, another fave Dean pic of mine.

Then Season 3 also gave us Dean and mini!Dean

The start of bangless Sam with powers - here he's in transition but cultivating his badassest look.

And Season 3 gave us the double tattoo and the fabulous Jus in Bello - though I am still gutted they killed off Victor. Dammit.


Bonus points for shooting Dean though.
And Mystery Spot - fabulous. Hitting that awesome magic of mixing comedy with poignancy that SPN used to do so well. Carver, what HAPPENED to you?

And of course, there was that very SPN Christmas - Peter on a popsicle, but that last scene makes me sniffle every time I watch it.

And then they actually went there, they killed Dean and sent him to Hell. What a set up for Season 4.
Anyhow I could pic spam y'all to death, so I'll stop here. In conclusion - Season 3 rocked.

Sam with powers is extra hot. As is Dean in a tuxedo.

Mystery Spot, Jus en Bello, AVSC, and let's not forget Gordon vamping out and Sam just squeezing his head right off with just some wire and those muscles.

It might have been an even more kick ass season without the writer's strike, but the world will never know.

Sam was indeed super scary with the razor wire...and Gordon was an brilliantly crazy villain. As was Kubrik and his Jesus van.

In an interview Kripke said if there had not been a writer's strike Sam would have saved Dean but turned darkside to do it.

YES! Season 3 is one of my favorites ever... It feels super-concentrated, with that ticking clock adding so much suspense. "Mystery Spot" and "A Very Supernatural Christmas" and Ben & Lisa...! And Ruby! And I admit that I really love Bela, too. Got no problem with her. Love the scene where Sam dreams about her in "Dream a Little Dream of Me."

And the way it ends. OMG.

I think for me the shortened length of season 3 due to the writers strike, made the season stronger and gave the episodes more punch and impact (and I too hope that we only missed out on filler eps!)

Mystery Spot is one of my all time favs, going from top notch comedy, to heart break and then twisted darkness. And who could forget the now infamous "I lost my shoe" from BDABR!!!

This was a great review, and despite it's shorter length S3 is one of my favourite seasons. So many great episodes and then that ending, what a shock at the time, I really expected Sam to save Dean. And Dean hanging on the wire screaming Sam still gives me chills. And yes, Dean in a tux was just perfection!

Yep, you pretty much live inside my head here.
I did like Bela, I know she was a bitch to the boys, but I just couldn't help but have a grudging affectio for the way she always used to outsmart them!
She and Dean so should have had that angry sex!!!!

Sometimes I can't believe that the Carver who wrote some of those amazing S3 episodes is the same guy who was showrunner last season. But maybe S10 will bring some of that S3 Carver sensibility back...
