Useful for fanfic - escaping from zip ties

karadinposted a video showing how you can break zip ties from the front, and this vid shows how to do the same thing if your hands are tied behind your back

All really interesting and useful for fanfic writing (hopefully NOT for real life!)

I saw this a while back, and although I haven't gotten the nerve to try it on myself yet, it did get me wondering how strong zip ties really are. I had used some zip ties to secure my folding dog peg to my car, and I wondered if I could break the ties by hand by using that sort of single burst of force.

Of course it worked way better than I could have imagined, and I went flying back and landed on my ass with the dog pen on top of me. How else could that have gone down???

*Raise an eyebrow* My guy works in federal law enforcement. Let me promise you, if those were military or law enforcement grade zips, that wouldn't do a damn thing for you. The ones you buy at a hardware store and NOT like the ones cops use. I wouldn't suggest trying this if you get arrested and they use them. For no other reason than if it actually worked, (which again, it wouldn't) but if it did, you'd get yourself shot. Breaking out of restraints is a fast way to a beat down.

Oh thanks for that info! So if you tried that with military grade ones you'd probably end up breaking your wrists - meep!

Probably. But the good news is, if you're a woman and some random freak abducted you or something, the chances of him having military or police grade would be really low. Trying it would sure be worth a shot at that point. Plus, cops know not to cinch them too tight, because they are more breakable then. But some psycho probably wouldn't know that. So yeah, it's be worth a try then.
