SPOILERPHOBES DO NOT READ
I think we are just expected to trust that what Crowley says he wants is actually what he really wants because it is clear from this episode that he is still manipulating both boys six ways from Sunday to get them to do stuff.  Look at how he used Dean to get Brady downstairs from that office - Dean could have been killed (and should have been badly injured the way Brady kicked him around like a football - another minor niggle about the inhumanly quick recovery times our heroes demonstrate on this show!).

Also for the record I think Crowley actually set up the whole hell hound thing. I think he probably lied about the nest of demons, he definitely brought both hell hounds back with him (he is the Crossroads demon after all, those babies are his personal preserve), the coin he tossed to Dean was his coin and the whole thing was done to convince Brady he had no choice but to turn his coat. Once again - he wanted the humans to react honestly and it worked alright.

I didn't find this the most dramatic of episodes; I get the feeling this one was there to set up the next two - which look like being really intense.  There was quite a bit of exposition going on which slowed the pace down - like Sam's proposal on the phone to Bobby (and I have to wonder how Dean is going to take it when he hears what's on Sam's mind).  I think that is how it will pan out - that Sam will try to trap Lucifer by using his own body...*wrings hands, scared*

And then there was all the filling in of the past story too, adding to the slowed pace - though Sam wasn't as devastated as I thought he might be to hear about the demons being so close to him for so long. When you think about it, I bet that must have crossed his mind many times since he learned about the whole YED demon blood thing - and is it any more shocking than finding out that angels had some sort of breeding programme that included your parents?  Or that you and your brother were born to be vessels for two Archangels?

The set up for Sam and his anger management issues coming into fruition for the finale felt a bit obvious - but that is the line they've been feeding us on and off this season - Dean has been telling him how angry his is, he acknowledged it in Sam Interrupted, he's rarely been given much to do other than be either remorseful or angry for a while now.

I do love Crowley, he has a kind of menace wrapped in an innocuous exterior and concealed under all that cockney charm, and his cynicism is amusing.
Bobby got the best line "I'll fill you so full of rock-salt you'll crap margeritas!"

Will Crowley return Bobby's soul?  Somehow I doubt it - demons lie, you know.  Oh Bobby....

Once again, I think this will grow with the rewatching, and it never hurts to see a beat up Dean more than once...(well, it hurts him obviously..)!

E/O Drabble Challenge: word count 100

Challenge word: Shoe

Dean’s memories of Hell

***********

Time to die

Sammy, where are you…?  Whispered, desperate, hoarse.

Quite an experience to live in fear, isn’t it?  That’s what it is to be a slave…

What it is to be in Hell, day after day after day…torn then tearing, ripped then ripping, the tortured turned torturer.

Sammy, help me….

Then to be dragged out of the pit, given a second chance.

Knowing you’d walk a thousand miles without shoes to see your brother’s face, to hear his voice – and another thousand in bare bloody feet to never tell him what you became.

Because that would be like dying all over again.
