Day 2
In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Lord of the Rings isn't a book that was ever part of my fandom life, but it had a huge influence on my imagination from the moment I read it when I was eleven. My uncle lent me his copy, I read it and immediately wanted to read it again. So I did. Then I bought my own copy, and read it so many times the book not only fell apart, the edges of the pages were worn away. A kind friend of my mum's rebound it for me after seeing my terrible amateur efforts with sellotape. I then foolishly lent that precious copy to my boyfriend when I was seventeen and he promptly lost it. I've never forgiven him!
I think Lord of the Rings influenced my decision to chose archaeology for my degree, it certainly shaped the stories I wrote, for many, many years. I never felt the urge to write about LOTR characters or the LOTR world though. Tolkein's words were enough, and for me, Alan Lee's drawings cannot be surpassed...
Then I had very firm images in my head and hated the idea of a film or even audio versions in case they didn't live up to my imaginings. However, I am much more open to other people's art now than when I was a kid, and I loved the movies. So yay for mellowing with age!
