Maybe the mystery doors were meant for comfortable air exchange: let fresh air in but not on the floor level where it's (in an old house like that) probably much colder.

I like the bird pics - you can really see the difference in the look and the feel of the images that the different techniques make. Such a simple yet very effective example.
