Season 12, Episode 2 : Mama Mia insta-reaction

Well, that was quite the roller coaster of emotional reactions!

I couldn’t believe they addressed Mary’s guilt over Sam straight away and so bluntly. It was actually well done. I love how Mary and Dean are dealing (or not dealing) with her return. It’s being handled openly but not unsubtly. I’d feared they might have used an emotional brickbat and been beating us and the characters over the head with it, but no, it’s sweet and lovely. Not least because Sam Smith is playing her part so well.

Those last scenes in the bunker between Sam, Dean and Mary, then between Mary and each of her boys separately really gripped my heartstrings and gave them a good thrum. Sam and Mary’s little conversation in particular – beautifully done.

I’m sure some people won’t have enjoyed the Crowley, Rowena and Lucifer interludes, but though they broke up the tension of Sam’s search and rescue, I actually liked them. And I am not a huge fan of Rowena, or Crowley. I love Mark P’s Lucifer, but this new chap is pretty menacing, I was newly convinced that Lucifer is mad bad and dangerous to know. I wonder about this vessel – they haven’t said anything about Vince yet apart from showing he’s strong enough to tolerate Lucifer for a while, but will he be like Nick and gradually decay? And if not, does that mean Vince is related to the Winchester/Campbell bloodlines?

I’m still not convinced by the British MoL motivation, that doesn’t make much sense to me yet. I don’t understand why they would suddenly be interested after all this time. They have all the information about the Winchesters’ pasts (Benny, Ruby etc) yet took no steps before? At the moment they just feel like a plot device introduced to provide a more personal hazard for the boys. Mr Ketch (or whatever his name is) as the enforcer is on his way with a Boondock Saints-type tattoo and briefcase full of weapons. It’s all rather James Bond/secret service, isn’t it?

It’s not necessarily a bad thing, other than more opportunities for them to bring in terrible British accents. Which brings me to a few things that threw me right out of the story:

–      Sam’s dream sexy scene with Toni for starters. I mean, you’d have to be a stronger woman than I to NOT sit there and hit the pause button a few times to drink in that lovely hairy chest and adorable hairy arm pit. Plus how lovely did Sam’s face look, bathed in the glow of the candlelight?

–      Another thing that threw me out of that scene was the wrongness of it, (I mean, Sam and Toni? Really?) but then that might have been deliberate.

–      Then there was that weird and frankly dreadful accent Mick was using. That meant I had to pause the play again to look the actor up on IMDB and find that he’s Irish, which explains why his pseudo-Cockney (or whatever it was he’d been asked to do) sounded so ridiculous. Ouch, ouch, ouch. Come on American TV, let the actors use their own fecking accents for Chuck’s sake.

–      And at the end, after the boys got back to the bunker, suddenly and miraculously Sam’s wounds were healed without a trace. That really pissed me off big time.  It was bad enough both Dean and Mary’s bruises had washed off, but we’d had loads of time to admire that inch and a half bloody cut on his cheek, and bam, it had completely vanished. I really thought after last season the show had realised they needed to keep injuries in place for at least the length of that episode, but it seems not.

All small things I know, but distracting and sloppy, and unnecessary.

Hey ho, now it sounds like all I want to do is complain about it, and I really don’t. It was fun, and tense, and there was SO much pretty. Those scenes in the sunshine outside Toni’s den were just lovely. And I’m loving Mary so much. So yeah, I’d still give this one 8 out of 10.

Pretty much agree with all of that, but is it possible Cas healed the injuries? I've kind of lost track of what he can and can't do these days :S

All we've seen him do that's angelic is put someone to sleep. He doesn't seem to be able to teleport, he's not particularly strong (Ms Watt beat him up after all, even if those were enchanted knuckledusters) so I've no clue what powers the show thinks he has. But if it was Cas, they should have at least mentioned it.

I kinda assumed Castiel had healed their wounds, so I wasn't to thrown by that.

Oh man, Sam's cut on his cheek bothered me too, especially when we saw the left over cuts on Toni at the end. And the bedroom scene, I didn't see the point in it, other than Sam's chest ;) and Toni trying to break his mind. Ha, now every woman he's slept with has died, wonder if she will, too. And another thing that bothers me is how Dean and Sam go down faster after being beat up. In the beginning of the show they stood up and fought much better and were more tolerable, now, once they're down, they're down, it's like everything they learn over the series is being unwound, has been for the past several season. I don't know if it's just Sam and Dean's character getting older, or if it's just the producers being sloppy. Does that make sense? Thanks for letting me vent.

Yeah true about their getting beaten up more now - I think early seasons it was a bit ridiculous that they rarely even got a bruise and were thrown around like rag dolls only to bounce up again as if nothing had happened, yet now it seems to have swung the other way. I'd like a happy medium where they are fierce kickass fighters but when they get hit they feel it.

I guess I'll have to assume that happened but if so, they should have had Mary question it or something, to show that's what happened. Maybe they had a scene that was cut out, but it felt very sloppy to me. Especially as Castiel's angel powers are very ambiguous since... well probably since he lost his grace and got it back.

I'm butting in here to say I'm wondering about Cas as well. I kept saying "Why is Cas driving?" I assumed he would have more power, but I have no reason to assume that.

Then again, in the past I think putting people to sleep and healing were pretty easy things for him to do.

Yeah but in the past healing has been beyond him on occasions - though I think that was for more serious injuries - even when he was fully angel'd up. Oh I don't know! But the problem is I don't think the show knows either.

Oh, yes, I agree! None of the writers seem to worry about keeping consistent with anything.

Didn't they talk about Cas healing last season. Was it Baby? I think so. Anyway I assume that he has that power back. And the angels still have broken wings, right - hence the driving. The only one we saw with intact wings and teleporting was/is Luci.
But yeah, that they didn't even acknowledge Sam's injuries pissed me off. Couldn't they at least give us a little bit of worry/aftercare with what he has been through?
I love Mary abd her interaction with the boys. That final scene with the boys, especially the one-on-one with Sam got me all emotional. So perfectly acted as well.
The BMoL don't make sense to me either, especially Toni

Not all of them. As far as we know Amelia is alive, Dr.Cara is alive and waitress from Baby as well.
And it's the writers being sloppy. One moment it's one punch and they are down and the next they are the badass freakin Winchesters, who won't be defeated.

All the scenes with at least two Winchesters!!! ♥ And Jared was really good again!!!

The Sam/Toni scene in the beginning was so wrong that I didn't buy it and since it didn't take very long for her to mention that there are more questions before fun times, I was sure that she was somehow messing with Sam's head again. The one problem I do have with the British MoL is that how they know everything about, like, Ruby and Benny and nothing about who recruited the boys etc.
