Not every lock has a key

E/O Drabble Challenge: word count 100
Challenge word: key
Warnings: Season 9 angst
Summary: Coda to Captives. Dean’s point of view.
***********
Dean listens Sam’s door shutting with a finality that speaks of deadbolts and barriers, all locked up so tight Dean doesn’t know if he’ll ever find the right key. When Kevin told them to sort themselves out, Dean had felt a moment of hope. Then he’d turned to find Sam had already gone.
What was more chilling? That Sam left without a word, or that Dean hadn’t felt him go?
There was a time when Dean had felt every breath Sam took as if it was his own.
Now all Dean feels is fear.
So he locks that down too.

E/O Drabble Challenge: word count 100
Challenge word: key
Warnings: Season 9 angst
Summary: Coda to Captives – Sam’s point of view.
***********
Sam shuts his door. The keyless lock has no meaning other than a means of separating Sam from Dean. When Sam was a kid, he’d have loved his own space, true privacy, the means to shut out the world around him.
Now Sam isn’t so sure it’s a good thing.
He and Dean were used to living in one box or another – be it the metal and leather of the Impala, or the quirky no-tell-motel rooms – always together, no respite.
Even when they weren’t talking, communication was a river running through them both. Inescapable.
This loneliness might end them both.
