Facts: (Unique Town/City Names)

Missouri :

Licking - Named for a mineral lick near the original town site. An early name thrown around was Buffalo Lick. (There are all kinds of images running through my head.)

Sturgeon - A railroad town next to an Amish settlement named after Isaac Sturgeon. (I don't know, the name seems fishy to me.)

Lemon-bar-kl

Lemon bars are not something I'm used to, but a friend mentioned they made them, and I was curious. So, I found a recipe on the internet and made my own. I'm not sure whether they are supposed to be crumbly like that or whether I messed something up, but anyway, they're very edible. Like... very gooey lemon cake. An interesting experience, to be sure. XD

I do have a more detailed, less superficial drawing that I'm working on as well as these daily quickies, but that's taking a bit more time.

I attended the UK Crossroads convention last weekend. It was a good weekend with great friends and some awesome guests!

It's always a joy to catch up with Jared, and have multiple ribs broken when he hugs you - I'm never so happy to be maimed as when I meet our lovely Mr Padalecki!

And it was a privilege to meet Matt 'Pestilence/Max Headroom' Frewer for the first time!

Matt Fscan

I treated myself to a fan meet with both Julian and Matt, and they didn't disappoint. They're both great character actors with massively long and diverse career histories, so I figured there would be lots of great anecdotes flying around, and I wasn't wrong. One in particular that springs to mind is when I asked Matt about 'Taken'. I enjoyed that show and he played a great character in it. I asked him if he had any good stories from his work on Taken. He said that the whole show was beset with problems throughout production, and Steven Spielberg who was the showrunner became increasingly frustrated as time went on.

The show was billed as 'Steven Spielberg presents Taken', and this strapline appeared on the title card for each episode, and the word from the set was that he should have changed it to 'Steven Spielberg 'resents' Taken. XD

In my previous posts about this businesstrip to Abu Dhabi in April I already showed some glimpses of the food I enjoyed over there. I didn't even get to try all the delicious things that were served, because it was a LOT! There were massive fancy buffets for breakfast and dinner in the Al Rimal restaurant of the hotel, lunch was served at the conference hall and that buffet was just as enormous. There was so much food on offer, there were even platters full of pretty bites during the morning and afternoon breaks. I was spoiled for choice!
This picspam includes photos of my filled plates, once or twice I started munching before I took a picture, so there are some half full plates as well :-D I often went for seconds (and yes, that means extra dessert(s) too). I was surprised with some treats in my room, and below I included dinner at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam (did not eat my greens). The midnight meal on the plane there is missing, because I was eating that while half asleep. I did save the passionfruit cheesecake dessert and had that for breakfast upon arrival at around 7 a.m. ;-)

There are over 100 photos, so I didn't add any comments, the hover-over text shows the date and time of each meal. Enjoy!

Murderbot: I'm enjoying it. Some minor quibbles, but so far so good. Also, I made icons!

murderbot figurine torso, reddish tinged. murderbot figurine runnning. murderbot figurine in space, purple.

Intoabar: Got my [community profile] intoabar assignment, and agh! My plan is to do (probably) the last in my SGA/Losers crossover series, and it'll be futurefic, set well after canon. Soooo, the mods gave me an SGA character who dies in season 5! But... I think I have a way around it. Good thing SGA is full of whacky plots!

Book recs:
Overgrowth by Mira Grant. Highly advanced sentient plants seed Earth (like they do with all viable planets) and their offspring/harbingers grow up exact mimics of humans, but tell everyone they're actually plants and the invasion is coming. No one believes them, of course. Then the armada arrives. Very gripping, highly engaging characters, explores issues about predatory sentients (like the plant aliens, and humans), and about found families and whether humanity en masse deserves saving. Although there was an ecological message (the plants aren't happy we've been terrible stewards of the planet), and the ending was happy in a limited way (but horrific in other ways), I felt the aliens were a bit too sweeping in their plans for the non-human parts of Earth's biosphere. And also, they weren't really alien enough for me; Tchaikovsky did that better. Very enjoyable, however, but it is horror, so CW for body-horror, explicit violence at times, and for carnivorous plant-aliens.

Death in the Spires by KJ Charles. Her first murder mystery - there's some romance as well, but it's mostly a mystery. Very well done: a nice complex plot, not too easy to guess the outcome, good pacing, and hard to put down. Set in 1905 England, focussing on a clique of gifted Oxford students (the Seven Wonders) who are haunted by the murder of one of their number at the college 10 years before. One of them, Jem, is driven to investigate, and it all gradually unravels. I liked it a lot. CW for some description of the original murder, and there's a past violation of one character but it's softened by period language and euphemisms. Also, lots of unthinking* period-appropriate slurs like 'cripple' (Jem has a club foot), and regarding the Black member of the clique.

* the author wasn't unthinking, but it's historically accurate so despite many of the characters being relatively enlightened for their times, there's some use of slurs.

Hell - has a uniquely Germanic origins... Maybe. Legend says when the original settlers stumbled across this parcel of land they uttered "So schön hell!" (translated as, "So beautifully bright!") (A lot more innocent than my mind could have come up with.)
