Jensen - pencil sketch in progress

I was dying to draw Jensen from that gorgeous new promo pic, so I started over the weekend on a digital version, but hated it. So I went back to basics and today I tried to do him in pencil (because you can't beat that softness you get from real graphite...)

I knew this wasn't quite right, though it was getting there after I made his nose shorter - I do have a tendency to make faces too long.  So I've opened it in GIMP and tried an overlay, so now I can see exactly where it's off - and how much I had actually got right! Which is really encouraging!  I am a very happy bunny right now.

So I need to taper his face more towards the chin, and widen his mouth a little.  Looks like I refined his nose a little too much too thought the length is pretty spot on! Hurrah!
Oh Jensen, why so pretty?

I don't know why. I don't really care. Just that he is. Gorgeous picture of a gorgeous man!

I think I just wanted an excuse to stare at that photo some more.... *sigh*

I think how you drew the eyes is amazing!

The eyes are my favourite part - i guess it shows, huh? *grin*
Thank you!

Fabulous start!

Thanks babe, I was greatly encouraged - I'm not as bad as I think I am! :D
I couldn't believe I'd got the eyes as well proportioned as I had done freehand

This is fascinating. Beautiful . . . and fascinating. Never thought of overlaying the drawing on a photo to check your proportions -- great idea!

\o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ !!

. . . so, erm, what hardness of lead are you using? ;)

I never thought of trying this before either and now I thinking why on earth didn't I think of this earlier? It is so useful to see where I am going wrong!

For this sketch so far I've used an HB propeller pencil and a normal 2B pencil. I'll probably break out the 4 and 8Bs later.

8B? I'd be afraid of something that soft, but I bet the results will be gorgeous! Can't wait to see what you do with it! (Man, it's been a loooong time since I tried to do a realistic drawing -- you're putting thoughts in my head.) ;)

Your Jensen really is beautiful. Carry on!

I generally try the 8B for shading and smudge the hell out of it with my finger. I suck at getting enough contrast in my drawings (one reason I love being able to digitise them afterwards!).

Gosh, but this is gorgeous. The eyes have it!

I love drawing eyes! They aren't quite right but close enough. Thank you! Now I have to not mess up the final version trying to correct my errors...

It looks really good so far! I look forward to seeing the finished version.

Thank you! Now I need to tweak it just enough so I don't mess it up

This is beautiful. Jensen's eyes look so real in that sketch. <3 fantastic.

Thank you m'dear!

Gorgeous subject and equally gorgeous work. The eyes and everything else are stunning and that you did that without graphing just pretty much makes me insanely jealous.

Also, I read the earlier comments - go 8B!

8B does scare me with its imprecision...!
